Enterprise Hard Drive Buying Guide: SAS vs SATA, 7.2K vs 10K, CMR vs SMR
Spinning drives still run most backup targets, file servers, and NAS builds, and the market is full of...
HPE StoreEasy 1650 2U storage servers in Doha, built on the ProLiant DL380 Gen9: twelve LFF hot-plug bays, two rear SSD bays for the operating system, Smart Array RAID and Windows Storage Server pre-installed. Configured systems and barebone chassis, delivered across Qatar.
The StoreEasy 1650 is HPE's 2U file storage server from the StoreEasy 1000 family. Underneath it is a ProLiant DL380 Gen9 with twelve large form factor bays across the front, two small form factor bays at the rear that hold the operating system drives, and a Smart Array controller with flash-backed cache. HPE ships it with Microsoft Windows Storage Server pre-installed and licensed, so it works as a Windows file server, iSCSI target or backup destination without a separate server licence. The QuickSpecs put internal raw capacity at up to 120 TB, and external D3000 or D6000 enclosures take it into the petabytes. ServerDove holds the 1650 in Doha as configured systems with memory, RAID controller and SAS drives fitted, and as barebone 12LFF chassis for buyers who bring their own drives.
There is one StoreEasy 1650 chassis: 2U, 12 LFF bays in front, 2 SFF bays at the rear, sold configure-to-order with no data drives or as pre-configured models named for their raw capacity. Do not confuse it with the StoreEasy 1650 Expanded (Apollo 4200 Gen9, 28 LFF bays) or the StoreEasy 1850 (the same DL380 Gen9 chassis with 24 SFF bays).
| Model | Part number | Data drives as shipped | Operating system |
|---|---|---|---|
| StoreEasy 1650 Storage | K2R15A | None; 2 x SFF SSD for the OS only | Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Standard |
| StoreEasy 1650 WSS2016 Storage | Q0F49A | None; 2 x SFF SSD for the OS only | Windows Storage Server 2016 Standard |
| StoreEasy 1650 16TB SAS | K2R16A | 8 x 2 TB 12G 7.2K LFF SAS, 4 open slots | Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Standard |
| StoreEasy 1650 32TB SAS | K2R17A | 8 x 4 TB 12G 7.2K LFF SAS, 4 open slots | Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Standard |
| StoreEasy 1650 32TB SAS WSS2016 | Q1J35A | 8 x 4 TB 12G 7.2K LFF SAS, 4 open slots | Windows Storage Server 2016 Standard |
| StoreEasy 1650 48TB SAS | K2R18A | 8 x 6 TB 12G 7.2K LFF SAS, 4 open slots | Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Standard |
Model names refer to raw capacity, not usable space after RAID, and on a refurbished unit the drives may have changed since the factory, so read the drive line of each listing rather than the model name.

The 1650 ships with a single processor and has a second socket free, as on any DL380 Gen9. The processor fitted depends on the model generation.
| Processor | Cores | Base clock | Cache | TDP | Fitted in |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intel Xeon E5-2609 v3 | 6 | 1.9 GHz | 15 MB | 85 W | Original models (K2R15A to K2R18A) |
| Intel Xeon E5-2609 v4 | 8 | 1.7 GHz | 20 MB | 85 W | WSS2016 models (Q0F49A, Q1J35A) |
The v3 part is Haswell-EP and the v4 part is Broadwell-EP. HPE offers a matching second processor kit for each generation (719052-B21 for v3, 817925-B21 for v4), and the QuickSpecs are explicit that the second processor must match the first. File serving is not processor-bound, so the usual reasons for adding the second CPU are the extra twelve memory slots and the second PCIe riser it enables, not raw compute. Because the board is a DL380 Gen9, other E5-2600 v3 and v4 processors are physically compatible, but HPE lists only the E5-2609 for the StoreEasy; ask before planning a swap.
Twenty-four DDR4 RDIMM slots, twelve per processor, of which twelve are usable with one CPU fitted. Every model ships with 16 GB as 2 x 8 GB. The original v3 models use DDR4-2133 and the WSS2016 v4 models DDR4-2400, in 8 GB and 16 GB HPE kits, and HPE advises adding the same type of memory the unit shipped with. The operating system licence caps memory at 4 TB on Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 and 24 TB on 2016, far above what the slots can hold. For a file server the useful upgrades are modest: more memory helps deduplication and caching, and each network adapter needs at least 2 GB of system memory according to HPE. We fit tested DDR4 registered memory to order.
This is the section that matters on a storage server. The 1650 has three layers: a Dynamic Smart Array B140i that only runs the two rear OS SSDs as a RAID 1 mirror, a Smart Array P440ar with 2 GB flash-backed write cache for the twelve front bays, and optional external Smart Array or HBA cards for disk enclosures.
| Controller | Role | Ports | Cache | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i | OS drives only | Embedded SATA | None | Runs the two rear SFF SSDs as RAID 1 with the OS pre-installed |
| HPE Smart Array P440ar/2GB FBWC | Front data bays | 2 internal 12 Gb/s SAS | 2 GB flash-backed | Standard on all built-to-order models; sits on the Flexible Smart Array connector, not in a PCIe slot |
| HPE Smart Array P840ar/2GB FBWC | Front data bays | 2 internal 12 Gb/s SAS | 2 GB flash-backed | Fitted to the WSS2016 configure-to-order model |
| HPE Smart Array P441/4GB FBWC (or 4-port P841) | External enclosures | 2 external 12 Gb/s SAS | 4 GB flash-backed | Needed to attach D3600, D3700, D6000 or D6020 enclosures |
| HPE H241 Smart Host Bus Adapter | External enclosures | 2 external 12 Gb/s SAS | None | Pass-through HBA; HPE's recommended external option |
The write cache is protected by the HPE Smart Storage Battery inside the chassis, so a power loss does not lose pending writes. The Windows Storage Server image adds Storage Spaces, deduplication and the StoreEasy Pool Manager on top of the hardware RAID, and many owners run the P440ar in RAID 6 or RAID 60 for large-capacity midline drives.
The front bays take HPE Smart Carrier LFF (3.5-inch) hot-plug drives, SAS at 12 Gb/s or SATA at 6 Gb/s, and 2.5-inch SSDs in a Smart Carrier Converter. HPE's list for the 1650 is midline 7,200 rpm capacity drives, and its stated best practice is to fill the chassis with one drive type and one capacity.
| Interface | Capacities HPE lists for the 1650 | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| SAS 12G midline LFF | 2 TB, 4 TB, 6 TB, 8 TB, 10 TB | 7,200 rpm |
| SATA 6G midline LFF | 1 TB, 2 TB, 6 TB, 8 TB | 7,200 rpm |
Twelve 10 TB drives give the 120 TB internal maximum. With 40 D3600 enclosures and five P441 controllers HPE quotes 4.92 PB raw. Drives from other makers need a Smart Carrier and may show as unauthenticated in iLO, so send us the drive part numbers you plan to use and we will check them. We stock SAS hard drives and 3.5-inch drives in Doha.
Every 1650 has an embedded HPE 331i four-port 1 GbE adapter. The single FlexibleLOM slot adds faster networking without using a PCIe slot: HPE lists the 366FLR (4 x 1 GbE), 560FLR-SFP+ and 562FLR-SFP+ (2 x 10 GbE SFP+), 561FLR-T (2 x 10GBASE-T), 640FLR-SFP28 (2 x 10/25 GbE) and InfiniBand FDR options. For PCIe adapters HPE recommends the 560SFP+ dual-port 10 GbE card, and also lists 10GBASE-T cards, 8, 16 and 32 Gb Fibre Channel HBAs and converged network adapters.
| Slot | Riser | Electrical | Connector | Form factor | Requires |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Primary (standard) | PCIe 3.0 x8 | x16 | Full height, half length | Processor 1 |
| 2 | Primary (standard) | PCIe 3.0 x8 | x16 | Full height, half length | Processor 1 |
| 3 | Primary (standard) | PCIe 3.0 x8 | x8 | Full height, half length | Processor 1 |
| 4 | Secondary (optional, 719073-B21) | PCIe 3.0 x16 | x16 | Full height, full length | Processor 2 |
| 5 | Secondary (optional, 719073-B21) | PCIe 3.0 x16 | x16 | Full height, full length | Processor 2 |
| 6 | Secondary (optional, 719073-B21) | PCIe 3.0 x8 | x8 | Full height, half length | Processor 2 |
All three standard slots are free, because the P440ar uses its own connector. The optional second riser needs the second processor installed. Rear connectors are two USB 3.0, VGA, the four 1 GbE ports, the dedicated iLO port and an optional serial port; inside are a USB 3.0 header and a microSD slot.
Two HPE Flexible Slot 800 W Platinum power supplies, hot-plug and redundant, with two IEC C13 to C14 jumper cords in the box. Input is 100 to 120 VAC or 200 to 240 VAC per supply. HPE rates the 800 W supply at a maximum of 3,207 BTU/hr at 100 VAC. Six hot-plug redundant fans cool the chassis. The DL380 Gen9 platform also accepts 500 W and 1400 W Flexible Slot supplies, but 800 W is the standard fit and is ample for twelve spinning drives, two processors and a couple of adapters.
The 1650 carries HPE iLO 4 with a dedicated management port, and every StoreEasy model includes an iLO Advanced licence from the factory: remote console, virtual media, power control, hardware health and firmware updates from a browser. On the Windows side HPE adds an Initial Configuration Tasks wizard for setup and networking, the StoreEasy Dashboard for capacity, performance and health with low-capacity email alerts, the Pool Manager for best-practice disk provisioning, and a StoreEasy Tools menu in Server Manager covering pools, snapshots, enclosure settings and firmware. System recovery media can be downloaded from HPE to rebuild the OS drives to factory state.
| Form factor | 2U rack, rail kit and cable management arm included |
|---|---|
| Height | 8.73 cm |
| Width | 44.55 cm |
| Depth | 73.02 cm (LFF chassis, without bezel) |
| Weight | Approximately 14.8 kg minimum to 23.6 kg with 12 LFF drives, two processors and two power supplies |
| Operating temperature | 10 to 35 °C standard; extended ranges for approved configurations |
| Fans | 6 hot-plug redundant |
The 1650 is sold with its operating system on the two rear SSDs: Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Standard on the original models and Windows Storage Server 2016 Standard on the WSS2016 models, both with unlimited client access licences. Windows Storage Server shares its code base with Windows Server and serves SMB 2.0 through 3.1.1, NFS v2 to v4.1, WebDAV, HTTP/HTTPS, FTP/FTPS and iSCSI, with File Server Resource Manager, data deduplication and Work Folders. It joins an Active Directory domain but cannot be a domain controller. HPE sold an upgrade kit (Q0F57A) to move a 2012 R2 unit to WSS 2016 as physical media with a new certificate of authenticity label. Because the hardware is a DL380 Gen9 the machine can be wiped and run under another operating system, but you then forfeit the bundled licence and the StoreEasy tooling.
Our StoreEasy 1650 range in Doha runs from barebone 12LFF chassis to fully configured systems with memory, the Smart Array P440ar, dual power supplies and SAS drives fitted. Refurbished units are tested before they are listed and are covered by the ServerDove warranty, with extended cover quoted on request. Delivery across Qatar is typically one day from Doha stock, and racking, cabling and base configuration, including the initial StoreEasy setup and share creation, are available as a service.
If you need a capacity point or drive mix that is not listed, send us the usable capacity and the RAID level you want and we will quote a build, or tell us whether you need the operating system drives present. Business customers can request a quotation for several units. Reach us on WhatsApp at +974 5521 2108, by email at sales@serverdove.com or through the contact page. For the same platform without the storage software, see the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9; for the wider range, see HPE storage.
The hardware is the same 2U DL380 Gen9 chassis, board and Smart Array family. What HPE adds is a fixed storage configuration (12 LFF front bays plus two rear SFF SSDs for the operating system), Windows Storage Server pre-installed with unlimited client access licences, an iLO Advanced licence, the StoreEasy management tools and a rail kit and cable management arm in the box. If you want a Windows file server, the 1650 saves the licence cost; if you want a virtualisation host, buy the plain DL380 Gen9.
No. The 1650 Expanded is built on the Apollo 4200 Gen9 with 28 LFF bays in front and rear rows, a P840ar controller and M.2 operating system drives, and HPE rates it at 280 TB internally. The standard 1650 covered here is a DL380 Gen9 with 12 LFF bays and 120 TB internally. Drives, power supplies and risers differ between the two, so check which one a listing refers to before ordering parts.
Twelve 3.5-inch drives internally, which at the 10 TB drives HPE lists is 120 TB raw. Usable capacity is lower after RAID: a RAID 6 set of twelve drives loses two drives' worth to parity. For more capacity, add a Smart Array P441, P841 or H241 with external ports and attach D3600, D3700, D6000 or D6020 disk enclosures; HPE quotes up to 4.92 PB with 40 enclosures.
Hot-plug 3.5-inch drives in HPE Smart Carrier LFF caddies, SAS 12 Gb/s or SATA 6 Gb/s, and 2.5-inch SSDs in a Smart Carrier Converter. HPE lists midline 7,200 rpm drives from 1 TB to 10 TB and recommends one type and one capacity across the chassis. Drives from other vendors need the correct carrier and may report as unauthenticated; send us the part numbers you plan to use and we will confirm before you buy.
Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Standard on the original K2R models and Windows Storage Server 2016 Standard on the Q0F49A and Q1J35A models, pre-installed on two mirrored SSDs in the rear bays. Both include unlimited client access licences, so no per-user or per-device CALs are needed for file sharing. The unit joins a domain but cannot be a domain controller. A refurbished unit's OS state varies; each listing says whether the OS drives are present and activated.
Yes. The board has two sockets and 24 DIMM slots, twelve per processor, and ships with one E5-2609 (v3 or v4 by model) and 16 GB. A matching second processor unlocks the other twelve slots and the optional second PCIe riser with two x16 full-length slots. Memory should match what is fitted: DDR4-2133 RDIMM on v3 units, DDR4-2400 RDIMM on v4 units. We can supply and fit tested processors and memory in Doha.
Yes, two ways. The FlexibleLOM slot takes a 560FLR-SFP+ or 562FLR-SFP+ (2 x 10 GbE SFP+), a 561FLR-T (2 x 10GBASE-T) or a 640FLR-SFP28 (2 x 10/25 GbE) without using a PCIe slot. Alternatively fit a PCIe card such as the 560SFP+, which HPE recommends. Windows Storage Server's SMB Multichannel spreads traffic across the ports. Transceivers or DAC cables are sold separately.
The StoreEasy 1650 is a Gen9-era product and HPE's QuickSpecs for the family were last revised in 2018, so it is well past active sale. Ask us for the current HPE support status before relying on a manufacturer contract. In practice the platform is a DL380 Gen9, one of the most common servers in service, so parts are plentiful, and ServerDove supports units it sells directly from stock in Doha.
Yes. Delivery across Qatar is typically one day from Doha stock. Racking, cabling and base configuration are available as a service, including iLO setup, RAID layout, the StoreEasy initial configuration wizard and joining the unit to your domain. Send the site details and the shares you need and we will quote the installation with the hardware.
