Enterprise Hard Drive Buying Guide: SAS vs SATA, 7.2K vs 10K, CMR vs SMR
Spinning drives still run most backup targets, file servers, and NAS builds, and the market is full of...
Dell PowerEdge R730 2U rack servers, tested and held in Doha. Two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 sockets, 24 DDR4 slots for up to 3 TB, up to 16 x 2.5-inch or 8 x 3.5-inch hot-plug bays, PERC RAID and iDRAC8. Delivered across Qatar.
The R730 is the two-socket 2U rack server of Dell's 13th generation PowerEdge range, sold alongside the 1U R630 on the same Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 platform. Where the R630 trades expansion for density, the R730 gives the same processors and 24 DIMM slots a full-height chassis: up to seven PCIe 3.0 slots, up to two internal GPU accelerators, and either sixteen 2.5-inch or eight 3.5-inch hot-plug bays. Dell aimed it at data warehouses, e-commerce, VDI, databases and HPC data nodes. Refurbished, it remains a sound host for general virtualisation, file and backup duties and any workload that needs slots and spindles more than the newest silicon. ServerDove supplies R730 barebone chassis from Doha and builds configured systems to order.
Dell built the R730 in two front-bay layouts. The backplane is fitted at the factory and decides which drives the server takes, so choose by capacity and drive type rather than planning to convert later.
| Chassis | Bays | Drive types | Maximum internal storage (Dell spec sheet) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16 x 2.5-inch | 16 hot-plug | SAS, SATA and nearline SAS hard drives; SAS and SATA SSDs | Up to 29 TB with 1.8 TB SAS hard drives | Virtualisation hosts, databases, SSD-heavy workloads |
| 8 x 3.5-inch | 8 hot-plug | SAS, SATA and nearline SAS hard drives; SAS and SATA SSDs | Up to 64 TB with 8 TB nearline SAS hard drives | Bulk capacity, backup targets, file and media storage |
The capacity figures are Dell's own from the December 2016 spec sheet and reflect the drives Dell offered at the time. Both layouts share a tool-less chassis, hot-plug redundant cooling and hot-plug redundant power supplies. An internal dual SD module is available for booting an embedded hypervisor without using a drive bay.
Two sockets for the Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 product family, the Broadwell-EP generation, on the Intel C610 chipset. Dell's spec sheet lists core options of 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 22 per processor with 2.5 MB of cache per core, so a fully populated system reaches 44 cores. The R730 launched with the earlier E5-2600 v3 generation in the same socket, and refurbished units are found with either; the v4 refresh is what the current spec sheet describes. Both processors in a system must match. The spec sheet describes the family rather than individual SKUs, so we do not reproduce a processor table here. Tell us the core count and clock speed you are after and we will quote from processors that fit this board.
Twenty-four DDR4 DIMM slots, twelve per processor, for up to 3 TB of memory. Dell lists 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB modules at speeds up to 2400 MT/s. ECC, single device data correction (SDDC) and spare rank are supported for availability.
| Module | All 24 slots populated |
|---|---|
| 16 GB | 384 GB |
| 32 GB | 768 GB |
| 64 GB | 1.5 TB |
| 128 GB | 3 TB (platform maximum) |
With one processor installed only its twelve slots are usable. Memory runs at the lower of the module rating and the speed the processor supports, so check both when adding DIMMs. Our server memory range covers DDR4 registered modules; send the service tag and we confirm the fit before shipping.
All front drives are hot-plug through the backplane. The RAID controller sits in a dedicated PERC slot, so it does not use one of the seven PCIe slots. Dell's spec sheet lists these controllers:
| Controller | Type | Placement | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| PERC S130 | Software RAID | Internal | Entry option, RAID handled by the host processor |
| PERC H330 | Hardware RAID | Internal | Entry hardware RAID without write-back cache |
| PERC H730 | Hardware RAID | Internal | Hardware RAID with non-volatile cache |
| PERC H730P | Hardware RAID | Internal | Larger cache; the usual choice for virtualisation and database hosts |
| PERC H830 | Hardware RAID | External | Connects external drive enclosures |
| 12 Gb/s SAS HBA | Non-RAID HBA | External | Pass-through connection to external SAS devices |
Supported drives are 12 Gb/s SAS, nearline SAS and SATA hard drives, and SAS and SATA SSDs. Dell's headline figure is up to sixteen 12 Gb/s SAS drives on dual RAID. Every drive must sit in the correct Dell hot-plug caddy for this generation; carriers from older PowerEdge servers are not interchangeable. We stock hard drives and caddies and ask for the service tag before pairing them, so the backplane and controller are confirmed rather than assumed.
Networking is on a Network Daughter Card (NDC) rather than a PCIe slot, so the base LAN can be changed without giving up expansion. Dell lists three NDC options for the R730: four-port 1 GbE, two-port 10 GbE plus two-port 1 GbE, and four-port 10 GbE.
Beyond the NDC there are up to seven PCIe 3.0 slots plus the dedicated PERC slot; the exact count depends on the riser configuration fitted. Up to two internal GPU accelerators are supported, which is what set the R730 apart from the R630 for VDI and medical imaging work. Which cards fit depends on the riser, the power supplies and cooling, so send us the accelerator model and we will confirm before you order.
Two hot-plug redundant power supply bays. Dell offers Platinum efficiency 495 W, 750 W and 1100 W AC units, a Titanium efficiency 750 W AC unit, and an 1100 W DC unit. Fit a matched pair. Size the supply for the processors, memory, drives and any GPU you intend to fit; tell us the build and we will confirm which rating it needs.
iDRAC8 with Lifecycle Controller is embedded in every R730. The Express licence is the default; the Enterprise licence is an upgrade and adds the remote console and virtual media that let you manage a server in a rack you never visit. vFlash media at 8 GB or 16 GB is a further upgrade. iDRAC Direct and iDRAC Quick Sync give at-the-server access to health status and configuration. The platform is IPMI 2.0 compliant and supports OpenManage Essentials, OpenManage Mobile and OpenManage Power Center, with integrations for Microsoft System Center and VMware vCenter and connections to HP Operations Manager, IBM Tivoli Netcool and CA management tools.
| Form factor | 2U rack, two sockets |
|---|---|
| Height | 8.73 cm (3.44 in) |
| Width | 44.40 cm (17.49 in) |
| Depth | 68.40 cm (26.92 in) |
| Rack mounting | ReadyRails II sliding rails: tool-less in 4-post racks with square or unthreaded round holes, tooled in threaded-hole racks; optional tool-less cable management arm |
Dell's spec sheet does not give a weight for the R730. Allow for the rails and cabling behind the 68.4 cm chassis when checking rack depth.
Dell's spec sheet lists Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and 2012 (SP2 and R2, including Hyper-V), Windows HPC Server 2008, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux, with Citrix XenServer, VMware vSphere ESXi and Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V available as embedded hypervisors. The sheet predates current releases of these operating systems, so check the OS or hypervisor vendor's compatibility list for the version you intend to run, and ask us if support for a specific release matters to your deployment.
ServerDove holds R730 stock in Doha and tests every refurbished unit before it is listed. Our R730 range is built around barebone chassis, typically the 16 x 2.5-inch layout, which we configure to order: choose processors, memory, PERC, drives and NDC and we will quote a complete system. A part or layout not on the site, including the 8 x 3.5-inch chassis, can be sourced on request. Hardware is covered by the ServerDove warranty, and extended cover can be quoted. Delivery across Qatar is typically one day from Doha stock, and installation, racking, cabling and base configuration are available as a service.
For a quote use the contact page, WhatsApp +974 5521 2108 or sales@serverdove.com. Related ranges: all Dell servers, the 1U PowerEdge R630 from the same generation, and the 14th generation PowerEdge R740 that replaced it.
They are the same generation with the same Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors and the same 24 DDR4 DIMM slots. The R630 is a 1U server with fewer drive bays and fewer, lower-profile PCIe slots. The R730 is 2U with up to 16 x 2.5-inch or 8 x 3.5-inch hot-plug bays, up to seven PCIe 3.0 slots and support for up to two internal GPU accelerators. Choose the R630 for rack density and the R730 for expansion, storage or GPUs.
The R740 is the 14th generation successor, built for Intel Xeon Scalable processors with iDRAC9 and a newer memory and PCIe generation. The R730 is the 13th generation platform on Xeon E5-2600 v3 and v4 with iDRAC8. In refurbished form the R730 costs less for a similar chassis, bay count and slot layout, so it is the better value for file, backup and general virtualisation work. Pick the R740 when you need the newest processors or a longer remaining support life.
Up to 3 TB across 24 DDR4 DIMM slots using 128 GB modules. Dell lists 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB DIMMs at speeds up to 2400 MT/s. Only the twelve slots belonging to an installed processor are usable, so a single-processor system is limited to half the slots. Memory speed follows the lower of the module rating and the processor's supported speed.
Dell's spec sheet lists the PERC S130 software RAID, the PERC H330, H730 and H730P hardware RAID controllers internally, the PERC H830 for external enclosures, and a 12 Gb/s SAS HBA for non-RAID external connections. The internal controller fits a dedicated PERC slot and leaves the PCIe slots free. For virtualisation and database hosts the H730P is the usual choice; the H330 suits light duties where a write cache is not needed.
Yes. Dell rates the R730 for up to two internal GPU accelerators, which is one of its main advantages over the 1U R630 and why Dell positioned it for VDI and medical imaging. Which cards fit depends on the riser configuration, the power supplies installed and cooling, so send us the accelerator model and the rest of the intended build and we will confirm before you order.
Dell's spec sheet for the R730 lists SAS, nearline SAS and SATA hard drives and SAS and SATA SSDs in the front bays; front-bay NVMe is not on the sheet. If your workload needs NVMe, tell us and we will confirm what can be fitted through the PCIe slots on a given unit, or suggest a platform that offers NVMe bays as standard.
The R730 is a 13th generation platform that Dell has superseded with the R740 and later models, and it is no longer sold new. Parts, memory, controllers and caddies for it remain widely available. For the exact support status of an individual server, check its service tag with Dell. Units bought from ServerDove are covered by the ServerDove warranty, with extended cover available on request.
Yes. R730 stock is held in Doha and delivery across Qatar is typically one day from stock. Installation, racking, cabling and base configuration are available as a service, and business customers can request a quotation for bulk orders by WhatsApp, email or the contact page.
