They share a history. Lenovo acquired IBM's x86 server business in 2014, and the System x line continued under Lenovo before being followed by ThinkSystem. IBM continues to make its own Power and mainframe systems, which are a different architecture and not what this collection covers.

Often, yes. Older System x models were widely deployed and still circulate on the refurbished market. Send the machine type and serial number from the server label, and describe what it runs. The team will look for a like-for-like unit or suggest a current alternative if one cannot be found.

Hypervisors such as VMware, Hyper-V and Proxmox can run hosts from different vendors, but live migration works best when processors are from the same family. Management tools, RAID controllers and spare parts differ between brands, which adds work. Matching the existing brand is usually simpler for small estates.
