This is a refurbished Dell PowerEdge R650 in the 8SFF configuration. It is supplied as a barebone with no processors, memory or drives fitted. The R650 is Dell's 1U, two-socket rack server from the 15th generation of PowerEdge. It uses the LGA4189 socket for 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors and takes DDR4 ECC registered memory. The front of this chassis holds 8 x 2.5 inch SFF bays that accept SAS, SATA and NVMe drives. PCIe 4.0 expansion and integrated iDRAC9 management complete the platform. The barebone suits IT teams and resellers in Qatar who already hold compatible CPUs and DIMMs, or who want to specify their own. Buying the chassis alone avoids paying for parts that would be removed and resold. It is also a sensible way to add a matching node to an existing R650 estate. The R650 belongs to Dell's 15th generation of PowerEdge, launched in 2021 alongside the 3rd Gen Xeon Scalable (Ice Lake) processors. The 8 x 2.5 inch bay layout is one of three front options Dell offered on this model, and it is the layout this unit is built with.
What you need to add
A barebone needs its core components before it will boot. Plan the build around the workload: core count and memory capacity decide virtualisation density, while drive choice decides storage performance. Fitting one processor works, but only half the DIMM slots and some PCIe lanes are then usable. For a dual-socket build, both processors must be the same model and stepping.
- Processors: one or two 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs for socket LGA4189, each with a heatsink suited to the 1U chassis.
- Memory: DDR4 ECC registered DIMMs, populated evenly across the eight channels per processor for full bandwidth.
- Drives: 2.5 inch SAS, SATA or NVMe drives, each mounted in a Dell 2.5 inch hot-plug carrier.
- Storage controller: a Dell PERC RAID controller or HBA if the build needs hardware RAID or SAS drives.
- Boot device: drives in the front bays or an optional M.2 boot module, depending on your operating system plan.
Compatibility
The R650 takes standard 15th generation PowerEdge components. Drive carriers must be Dell 2.5 inch hot-plug carriers; 3.5 inch carriers do not fit this bay layout. NVMe drives need the matching backplane and cabling, so plan the drive mix before buying drives. Memory must be DDR4 ECC registered, and RDIMMs and LRDIMMs cannot be mixed in the same server. Rack mounting uses Dell sliding or static rails sized for a 1U PowerEdge chassis.
