The Dell PowerEdge R640 is Dell's 14th generation (14G) dual-socket 1U rack server, launched in 2017 for Intel Xeon Scalable processors. This is the 8 SFF chassis, also written 8SFF, under our SKU SRV-DELL-R640-8SFF-BARE. It has eight 2.5 inch hot-plug SAS and SATA bays at the front, two LGA3647 sockets, 24 DDR4 DIMM slots, up to three PCIe 3.0 slots and iDRAC9 with Lifecycle Controller. It is supplied as a barebone, with no processors, memory or drives fitted. IT teams and system builders in Doha and across Qatar choose a barebone Dell R640 when they already hold Xeon Scalable CPUs and DDR4 RDIMMs to redeploy, or when they want one fleet standard rather than an inherited build. Typical roles are VMware ESXi, Hyper-V and Proxmox hosts, web and application tiers, and software-defined storage nodes.

The R640 was built in three front layouts: 4 x 3.5 inch, 8 x 2.5 inch and 10 x 2.5 inch. This is the 8 bay SAS and SATA version. Memory speed and capacity depend on the processors you fit, so the figures below are platform maximums.
What you need to add
Plan the build around the processors first, because they set memory speed and usable DIMM slots. With one CPU only 12 slots are active. Second generation Xeon Scalable parts need a recent BIOS, so update firmware through Lifecycle Controller before swapping in Cascade Lake CPUs.

Compatibility

Do not mix RDIMMs and LRDIMMs in one system, and populate memory evenly across both processors. The 8 bay layout has no front NVMe; use a PCIe NVMe card or BOSS instead. Earlier 13th generation drive carriers are a different design and do not fit the 14G bays.

That covers Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum models with up to 28 cores per CPU. Second-generation support depends on a suitably recent BIOS. This barebone chassis ships without processors, so you will need to supply one or two CPUs along with compatible heatsinks.
What memory does the R640 use and how many slots does it have?
The R640 has 24 DIMM slots and uses DDR4 ECC registered memory, either RDIMMs or LRDIMMs. Twelve slots are tied to each processor, so all 24 are only usable with two CPUs installed. Supported memory speed depends on the processor: second-generation Xeon Scalable CPUs support faster DDR4 than first-generation parts. Avoid mixing RDIMMs and LRDIMMs in the same system.
Does the 8 SFF R640 support NVMe drives?
On the R640, front-bay NVMe support is tied to specific backplane configurations, most notably the 10-bay 2.5-inch chassis. The 8-bay SFF layout is the SAS/SATA configuration, designed for 2.5-inch SAS and SATA hard drives and SSDs. If you need NVMe storage in this chassis, a PCIe add-in card or Dell's BOSS boot device are the usual alternatives to NVMe front bays.
What do I need to add to make this barebone R640 work?
The listing specifies no CPU, no RAM and no drives. As a minimum you will need at least one Xeon Scalable processor with heatsink, DDR4 ECC registered memory, a boot device and storage in Dell 14G drive carriers. What RAID controllers work in the PowerEdge R640?
The R640 uses Dell's 14th-generation modular storage controllers, which sit in a dedicated internal slot. Common options include the PERC H330 for basic RAID, the PERC H730P and H740P for cached hardware RAID, and the HBA330 for pass-through use with ZFS, vSAN or Ceph. Using a modular controller keeps the PCIe expansion slots free for networking or other add-in cards.
What is the difference between the R640 and the R740?
Both are Dell 14th-generation dual-socket servers using LGA3647 Xeon Scalable processors, 24 DDR4 DIMM slots and iDRAC9. The R640 is a 1U chassis built for compute density, with fewer drive bays and up to three PCIe slots. The R740 is a 2U server with more drive bays and more PCIe expansion, including support for full-height and GPU cards. Choose the R640 when rack space matters more than expansion.
What remote management does the R640 have?
