This is a refurbished Dell PowerEdge R740 in its 8 x 3.5 inch LFF chassis, sold as a barebone under our SKU SRV-DELL-R740-8LFF-BARE. The R740 is Dell's mainstream 2U dual-socket rack server, introduced in 2017 for the Intel Xeon Scalable processor family on the LGA3647 socket. This R740 8LFF build has no processors, memory, drives or drive carriers fitted. Fillers are fitted to the front bays, and iDRAC9 remote management is integrated on the system board. Buyers in Qatar choose this barebone when they already hold processors, DDR4 ECC Registered memory or large-capacity 3.5 inch drives, or when they want to specify every component themselves. The eight large-form-factor bays suit file servers, backup targets, video storage and virtualisation hosts that need capacity more than drive count. We keep these chassis in Doha for system builders, resellers and IT teams expanding an existing R740 estate.

The R740 belongs to the Dell PowerEdge generation built for Intel Xeon Scalable processors, and both the first and second generation of that family run in it once the BIOS is current. Memory capacity scales with processor count: the 24 DIMM slots are split 12 per socket, so a single-processor build can use only half of them.
What you need to add
A barebone needs the core components before it will boot an operating system. Plan the build as a set so the processors, memory and storage controller match each other and the workload.
- One or two Intel Xeon Scalable processors for the LGA3647 socket, each with the correct Dell heatsink. Two processors should be the same model and stepping.
- DDR4 ECC Registered memory, RDIMM or LRDIMM. Do not mix the two types in one server, and populate slots evenly across both processors.
- Dell 3.5 inch hot-plug drive carriers for each bay you intend to use, plus SAS, SATA or SSD drives.
- A Dell PERC RAID controller or HBA if one is not fitted, with the matching backplane cables.
- A network daughter card if the build needs onboard Ethernet ports.
- Two matching hot-plug power supplies for redundancy, and rails if the server is going into a rack.

One Dell PowerEdge R740 8 x 3.5 inch LFF barebone chassis with front bay fillers fitted. Drive carriers, processors and memory are not included.
Compatibility
The front bays take Dell 3.5 inch hot-plug carriers made for this PowerEdge generation; carriers from older PowerEdge servers use a different latch and will not seat correctly. A 2.5 inch SSD can be fitted in a 3.5 inch bay with a Dell adapter carrier. Memory must be DDR4 ECC Registered; unbuffered DDR4 and older DDR3 modules will not work. Any Dell ReadyRails kit specified for the 2U R740 chassis will fit, and sliding rails are the better choice if the lid will be removed for upgrades in the rack. Update the BIOS and iDRAC9 firmware before fitting second generation Xeon Scalable processors.

At minimum it needs an Intel Xeon Scalable processor with heatsink, DDR4 registered memory, power supplies if not already fitted, and a boot device. For the front bays you will also need Dell 14th-generation 3.5-inch drive carriers and, for RAID, a PERC controller such as the H730P or H740P. A network daughter card or PCIe network adapter provides data connectivity beyond iDRAC.
Which processors does the PowerEdge R740 support?
The R740 has two LGA3647 sockets and supports 1st Gen Intel Xeon Scalable (Skylake-SP) and 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable (Cascade Lake) processors across the Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers. 2nd Gen processors may require a current BIOS. It can run with one or two CPUs, though some PCIe slots and half of the DIMM slots depend on the second processor being fitted.
What memory does the R740 use?
It uses DDR4 ECC registered memory, either RDIMM or LRDIMM, across 24 slots with 12 per processor. RDIMMs and LRDIMMs should not be mixed in the same system. The running memory speed is set by the processor model and the number of DIMMs per channel, with 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable processors supporting up to 2933 MT/s.
How does the R740 differ from the R740xd?
Both are 2U, two-socket 14th-generation servers on the same platform. The R740 is the general-purpose model with up to eight 3.5-inch or sixteen 2.5-inch front bays. The R740xd is the storage-dense variant, offering up to twelve 3.5-inch or twenty-four 2.5-inch front bays plus optional rear and mid-bay drives, at the cost of some expansion flexibility.
Can 2.5-inch SSDs be used in the 3.5-inch bays?
Yes, SAS and SATA SSDs in the 2.5-inch form factor can be fitted in the LFF bays using a 3.5-inch carrier with a 2.5-inch adapter, or a hybrid carrier designed for this purpose. The drives connect through the same SAS/SATA backplane, so speed is set by the drive and the installed controller.
What remote management does the R740 have?
It has integrated iDRAC9 with Lifecycle Controller, providing remote power control, hardware health and sensor monitoring, firmware updates, OS deployment and alerting. Features such as the HTML5 virtual console and virtual media depend on the iDRAC licence level, Express or Enterprise, applied to the system.
What does refurbished mean at ServerDove?
