This is a refurbished HP 146GB enterprise hard disk drive, sold as SKU HDD-HP-146G-15K-SAS-CADDY. It has a 2.5-inch small form factor, a 15,000 rpm spindle and a 6Gb/s SAS interface. It comes fitted in an HPE hot-plug caddy for the SFF drive bays of HPE ProLiant servers. Most buyers need it to replace a failed member of an existing RAID 1 or RAID 10 array behind a SAS RAID controller, or to keep an older system running until its planned retirement. The capacity is small by current standards. The reason to choose it is access time: a 15K spindle has lower rotational latency than 10K and 7.2K drives. That suits operating system mirrors, database transaction logs and small volumes with random I/O, where response time matters more than space. This is a 6Gb/s SAS drive. SAS is backward compatible, so a 12Gb/s controller or backplane negotiates the link down to 6Gb/s, and the drive's throughput is limited by its spindle and platters rather than the link. It cannot connect to SATA-only ports: a SAS controller or HBA and a SAS-capable backplane are required.
Installation
Before ordering, compare the caddy with a drive already in your server. HPE used one hot-plug carrier design for ProLiant G1 to G7 and introduced the SmartDrive carrier with Gen8, and the earlier and later carriers do not fit each other's bays. The fitted carrier suits SFF bays only; a 3.5-inch LFF bay needs a converter designed for that server, with the connector kept at the correct position for the backplane.
In a hot-plug bay on a controller that supports it, the drive can be inserted with the server running. Before pulling a failed drive from a live array, check in the controller's management tool that the array is redundant, so removing the drive does not take the volume offline. Once the new drive is in a degraded array, let the rebuild complete before making any further drive changes.
Match spindle speed, interface and capacity within an array. A 15K drive mixed with 10K drives gains nothing, because the array performs at the level of its slowest member. A replacement must be at least as large as the drive it replaces, which this drive is for a 146GB array.

That depends on the caddy, not the drive. HPE used one hot-plug carrier design for ProLiant G1 to G7 and introduced the SmartDrive carrier with Gen8. The two do not fit each other's bays. Compare the caddy in the photographs with a drive already in your server, or check the drive spares listed for your server model, before ordering.
Will a 6Gb/s SAS drive work on a 12Gb/s SAS controller?
Yes. SAS is backward compatible, so a 12Gb/s controller or backplane negotiates the link down to 6Gb/s for this drive. The drive's own throughput is limited by its spindle and platters rather than the link, so in practice running it on a faster controller makes little difference to its performance.
Can this drive be used on a SATA-only controller or backplane?
No. A SAS drive needs a SAS controller and a SAS-capable backplane. The compatibility only runs one way: SATA drives can usually connect to SAS controllers, but SAS drives cannot connect to SATA-only ports. If your server has a basic SATA controller, you will need a SAS RAID controller or HBA to use this drive.
Can I mix this 15K drive with 10K drives in one RAID array?
Most RAID controllers will accept it. The array will then perform at the level of its slowest member, so the 15K drive gains nothing. Best practice is to match spindle speed, interface and capacity within an array. A replacement member must be at least as large as the drive it replaces, which this drive is for a 146GB array.
Why choose a 146GB 15K drive rather than a larger one?
Usually to keep an existing array consistent, or to replace a failed member with an identical specification. A 15K spindle also gives lower access times than 10K or 7.2K drives. That still suits small boot mirrors and log volumes. Where capacity matters more than latency, a larger 10K drive or an SSD is the better fit.
Is this drive hot-swappable?
Yes. It is a hot-plug drive in a hot-plug caddy, so it can be removed and inserted while the server is running. This assumes the bay is a hot-plug bay and the controller supports it. Before pulling a drive from a live array, confirm in the controller's management tool that the array is redundant, so removing the drive does not take the volume offline.
Will this 2.5-inch drive fit a 3.5-inch LFF bay?
Not in its current caddy. The fitted carrier is made for SFF bays only. A 3.5-inch bay needs an LFF carrier or a 2.5-to-3.5-inch converter designed for that server. Check that any converter keeps the drive's connector at the correct position for the backplane.
What does refurbished mean at ServerDove?
