Nine hundred gigabytes at 10K rpm was the sweet spot of the 6Gb/s SAS era: roughly twice the capacity of the 450GB drives it replaced at the same performance, with sequential throughput near 200 megabytes per second and the random access of a 10K spindle. Six or eight of them in RAID 10 still make a respectable database volume where flash is not justified. The 6Gb/s interface runs at full speed on 12Gb/s controllers of later ProLiant generations, so the drive is also a low cost way to fill spare bays in a Gen10 server for bulk storage.
Installation
Fit the drive in an HPE SmartDrive carrier, or the earlier G7 carrier for older servers, neither of which is included, and slide it into a bay while the server is running. The Smart Array controller identifies it, and if the logical drive is degraded the rebuild begins automatically; otherwise assign it through the Smart Storage Administrator as a new array member or a spare. Keep drives in an array to the same part number and firmware level, which HPE's update tools maintain.
