The 12Gb/s figure is the SAS link rate, not the sustained transfer rate. Data comes off the platters well below either 6Gb/s or 12Gb/s, so on a 6Gb/s controller the link negotiates down and the drive performs much the same. For random I/O the figure that matters is the 10,000 RPM spindle speed, which gives shorter rotational latency than a 7.2K nearline drive.
A SAS drive needs SAS hardware end to end. SATA drives run on SAS controllers, but a SAS drive will not run on a SATA-only controller or backplane.
Installation
ProLiant SFF bays take drives in an HPE carrier, and carrier designs differ between server generations, so the carrier must match the drive cage in your server. In a redundant array (RAID 1, 5, 6 or 10) the failed drive can be pulled and this one inserted with the server running, after which the controller rebuilds the array onto it. Identify the failed drive by its bay LED or in the controller management tool before removing anything, because pulling a healthy member from a degraded array can lose data. Most controllers accept a replacement of equal or greater capacity, and matching interface, spindle speed and capacity keeps array performance consistent. Let the rebuild finish before replacing any further drives.

Will this drive work on a 6Gb/s SAS controller?
Yes. SAS is backward compatible, so a 12Gb/s drive connected to a 6Gb/s SAS controller or backplane negotiates down to 6Gb/s. For a spinning 10K drive, the 6Gb/s link rate is rarely the bottleneck, because sustained transfer from the platters is well below either link speed.
Can I use a SAS drive on a SATA controller?
No. A SAS drive needs a SAS controller and a SAS-capable backplane. SATA drives can run on SAS controllers, but this does not work the other way round. Check that the server's drive cage and RAID controller or HBA support SAS before ordering.
How does a 10K SAS drive compare with a 7.2K nearline drive?
A 10K drive has shorter rotational latency and handles random I/O better, which suits virtual machines, databases and busy file shares. 7.2K nearline drives offer more capacity per drive at lower cost and are better suited to backup targets and archive storage, where throughput matters more than response time.
Can I mix this drive with other 1.2TB drives in an existing array?
Most RAID controllers accept any member of equal or greater capacity. Matching the interface, spindle speed and capacity of the existing drives keeps array performance consistent. Using the same HPE part number as the drives already installed is the simplest way to avoid mismatches.
