HPE eight bay SFF SAS and SATA backplane board 780428-001, the hot-plug backplane behind the 8SFF cage of Gen9 and Gen10 servers.
HPE part 780428-001 is the eight bay small form factor drive backplane that mounts behind the 8SFF drive cage of ProLiant Gen9 and Gen10 servers, providing hot-plug connections for eight 2.5 inch SAS drives at 12Gb/s or SATA drives at 6Gb/s. It is the board the drives plug into and the controller cables connect to, and it is the part needed when adding a second cage to a 2U server or replacing a backplane with failed bays. It is refurbished. The backplane carries two Mini SAS ports, each serving four bays, a power connector from the chassis harness and a signal connector that drives the SmartDrive carriers' status lights; it has no expander, so all eight bays connect straight through to the controller at full speed. Adding a second cage to a 2U ProLiant needs this board, the cage itself, a power and signal cable and a second pair of SAS cables to the controller, or an expander card if the controller has only two ports.
The same board serves both generations because HPE kept the 8SFF cage and SmartDrive carrier unchanged from Gen9 to Gen10, which is also why drives and carriers move freely between them.
Installation
Power the server down and unplug it, remove the lid, and pull the drives from the cage after labelling their bay positions. Remove the cage, unscrew the old backplane from its rear, fit 780428-001 in its place and reconnect the power, signal and SAS cables, then refit the cage and the drives in their original bays. On boot the controller should list all eight bays; a missing group of four points to an unseated SAS cable.
