The backplane is the circuit board behind a server's drive bays. Drives plug into it from the front, and cables run from its rear to the RAID controller, HBA or motherboard. This range covers replacement backplanes for Dell and HPE servers, such as HPE 8-bay SFF SAS/SATA boards, with the Mini SAS cables that connect them.
It is for anyone replacing a faulty board, adding a second drive cage, or changing what a chassis can hold. Other backplanes can be sourced on request.
| Type | Accepts | Connects to |
|---|---|---|
| SAS/SATA | SAS and SATA hard drives and SSDs | RAID controller or HBA by SAS cables |
| NVMe | NVMe U.2 SSDs | PCIe lanes from the motherboard, a riser or a switch card |
| Universal or mixed | SAS, SATA and NVMe in designated bays | Both a controller and PCIe |
| Expander | More bays than the controller has ports | Controller by fewer cables |
Backplanes are held in Doha, with delivery across Qatar usually within a day. Send the server model, or the Dell service tag or HPE serial number, with the drive layout you want, and the team will confirm the board and cables. Drives are in Hard Drives. Backplanes are covered by the ServerDove warranty, and fitting and cabling are available as a service.
It connects the hot-plug drive bays to the storage controller. Each drive slides into a connector on the backplane, which carries data and power, and cables from the back of the board run to the RAID controller, HBA or motherboard. Many backplanes also drive the bay status lights and report drive presence, so the server knows which bay holds which drive.
Not on that backplane. NVMe drives need a backplane with NVMe-capable bays and PCIe connections to the motherboard, a riser or a switch card. Some servers can be upgraded by swapping the backplane and adding the right cables and cards, while others cannot take NVMe at all. Send the server model and the team will check what is possible.
Yes. SAS backplanes and controllers accept SATA drives, which is why most servers can mix the two across different arrays. The reverse does not work: SAS drives will not run on a SATA-only backplane or controller. Keep drives of one type within each RAID array, and check the caddy matches your server generation.
Typical signs are a group of bays that stops detecting drives, drives that drop out and return, bay lights that do not work, or the controller reporting a missing enclosure. Faulty cables and controllers can cause the same symptoms, so it is worth reseating cables and checking logs first. Send the logs or error messages and the team can help narrow it down.
An expander backplane includes a SAS expander chip that lets one controller connection serve more bays than the controller has ports. It is common in servers with many drive bays. The trade-off is that bays share the bandwidth of the link to the controller, which rarely matters for hard drives but can for large numbers of fast SSDs.
