How to Inspect a Refurbished Server Before You Buy: A Practical Checklist
"Refurbished" describes a process, not a guarantee. A properly refurbished server has been diagnosed, tested and verified component...
Refurbished Dell PowerEdge R620 1U rack servers, tested and stocked in Doha, with dual Intel Xeon E5-2600 or E5-2600 v2 processors, 24 DDR3 DIMM slots and 4, 8 or 10 front bays, delivered across Qatar within a day.
The R620 is Dell's dual-socket 1U server from the 12th generation PowerEdge line, released in 2012 and refreshed for v2 processors in 2013. It is two generations behind the R640 and one behind the R630, which is precisely why it is the cheapest dual-socket 1U server we sell. For a lab, a test bench, a Proxmox or ESXi host that will never see production traffic, a firewall or a backup target, it still does the job at a price that makes a modern server look extravagant. Go in with clear eyes: DDR3 memory, PCIe Gen3 on the first generation of it, and no more BIOS updates from Dell.
The R620 shipped in three front-bay configurations. The chassis cannot be converted from one to another after purchase, so choose by how many drives you need and what type.
| Chassis | Front bays | Drive types | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 x 3.5" | 4 | SAS, SATA | Bulk capacity, backup targets |
| 8 x 2.5" | 8 | SAS, SATA, SSD | General virtualisation and application hosts |
| 10 x 2.5" | 10 | SAS, SATA, SSD | Denser SSD arrays; no NVMe support on this generation |
All variants take an optional internal dual SD module for a hypervisor boot device, which is the usual way to boot ESXi on this platform.
The R620 takes Intel Xeon E5-2600 (Sandy Bridge-EP, 2012) and E5-2600 v2 (Ivy Bridge-EP, 2013) processors in two LGA2011 sockets, with TDPs up to 135 W. v2 CPUs need BIOS 2.0 or later and unlock 1866 MT/s memory. Both CPUs in a system must be identical. The list below covers the SKUs most commonly found in refurbished R620 units; the platform supports up to 12 cores per socket. [VERIFY: which CPUs you stock for this model]
| Processor | Cores | Base clock | TDP | Memory speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xeon E5-2609 v2 | 4 | 2.5 GHz | 80 W | 1333 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2620 v2 | 6 | 2.1 GHz | 80 W | 1600 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2630 v2 | 6 | 2.6 GHz | 80 W | 1600 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2640 v2 | 8 | 2.0 GHz | 95 W | 1600 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2650 v2 | 8 | 2.6 GHz | 95 W | 1866 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2660 v2 | 10 | 2.2 GHz | 95 W | 1866 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2670 v2 | 10 | 2.5 GHz | 115 W | 1866 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2680 v2 | 10 | 2.8 GHz | 115 W | 1866 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2690 v2 | 10 | 3.0 GHz | 130 W | 1866 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2695 v2 | 12 | 2.4 GHz | 115 W | 1866 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2697 v2 | 12 | 2.7 GHz | 130 W | 1866 MT/s |
| Processor | Cores | Base clock | TDP | Memory speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xeon E5-2620 | 6 | 2.0 GHz | 95 W | 1333 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2630 | 6 | 2.3 GHz | 95 W | 1333 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2640 | 6 | 2.5 GHz | 95 W | 1333 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2650 | 8 | 2.0 GHz | 95 W | 1600 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2660 | 8 | 2.2 GHz | 95 W | 1600 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2670 | 8 | 2.6 GHz | 115 W | 1600 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2680 | 8 | 2.7 GHz | 130 W | 1600 MT/s |
| Xeon E5-2690 | 8 | 2.9 GHz | 135 W | 1600 MT/s |
The E5-2650 v2 to E5-2697 v2 range is the sweet spot on this platform: v2 silicon, 1866 MT/s memory support and 8 to 12 cores per socket, which is enough for a comfortable lab hypervisor at a very low price.
Twenty-four DDR3 DIMM slots, twelve per processor across four channels. Registered (RDIMM) and load-reduced (LRDIMM) modules are supported; they cannot be mixed in the same system. With one CPU installed, only the twelve slots on that side are usable. DDR3 is now inexpensive on the used market, which is part of the appeal.
| Module | Capacities | Maximum system memory |
|---|---|---|
| RDIMM | 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB | 768 GB with 24 x 32 GB |
| LRDIMM | 32 GB, 64 GB | 1.5 TB with 24 x 64 GB (v2 CPUs) |
Populate all four channels per CPU in matched sets: 8, 16 or 24 DIMMs in total for a dual-CPU system. Memory runs at the lower of the DIMM rating and the CPU limit, and three DIMMs per channel drops the speed to 1066 or 1333 MT/s, so 24-DIMM configurations trade bandwidth for capacity.
Drive support depends on the backplane fitted at the factory. All backplanes are hot-plug. The controller options are:
| Controller | Type | Cache | RAID levels | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PERC S110 | Software RAID (SATA) | None | 0, 1, 5, 10 | Onboard; SATA only, adequate for boot mirrors |
| PERC H310 | Hardware RAID | None | 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 | Entry level; no cache; can be flashed to IT mode for ZFS or Ceph |
| PERC H710 | Hardware RAID | 512 MB NV | 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 | The common choice for virtualisation and application hosts |
| PERC H710P | Hardware RAID | 1 GB NV | 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 | Larger cache; best for database hosts and SSD arrays |
| PERC H810 | Hardware RAID | 1 GB NV | 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 | External SAS ports for MD1200 or MD1220 expansion shelves |
Supported drive types are 6 Gb/s SAS and SATA in both hard disk and SSD form; there is no NVMe support in the bays. Drives need the Dell 11th to 13th generation caddy, which is the same family across those generations and easy to source.
Onboard networking is provided by a Network Daughter Card (NDC) that slots into a dedicated connector rather than a PCIe slot. Common options:
Beyond the NDC, the R620 offers up to three PCIe Gen3 slots (two low-profile and one full-height on the standard riser). That is enough for a Fibre Channel HBA, a 10 GbE adapter and an SSD accelerator card. Full-height or double-width GPUs need the 2U R720.
Two hot-plug redundant power supply bays, configured 1+1. Options are 495 W, 750 W and 1100 W in Platinum grade. A dual-CPU system with a full memory load and a PERC generally sits within the 750 W envelope. Both supplies in a system should be the same rating.
Every R620 includes iDRAC7 with a dedicated management port. The Express licence covers remote power, health monitoring and basic alerts; the Enterprise licence adds the virtual console and virtual media. iDRAC7 predates Redfish and its console needs Java or an older browser plugin on most firmware, which is the main practical limitation of managing this generation remotely. Enterprise licences can still be added to any unit.
| Form factor | 1U rack, 2 socket |
| Height | 42.8 mm (1U) |

| Weight | Up to approximately 20 kg fully configured [VERIFY] |
| Rails | Dell ReadyRails II sliding or static [VERIFY the kit you supply] |
| Operating temperature | 10 to 35 °C continuous |
Windows Server 2012 R2 and 2016; Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and 7; SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 and 12; Ubuntu Server LTS releases; VMware ESXi 5.5, 6.0, 6.5 and 6.7; and Proxmox VE. Windows Server 2019 and later and ESXi 7.0 and later are not supported on this generation, and ESXi 7 will refuse to install on it. If you need a current hypervisor, buy the R630 or R640 instead.
Every unit we sell has been through full hardware diagnostics and a burn-in run: memory tested across every installed DIMM, controller and drive health verified, both power supplies load-tested, and the management controller reset and confirmed reachable. BIOS is returned to defaults and the firmware brought to a stable release. Units carry a six-month warranty and are held in Doha, so a replacement part is a short drive away rather than a shipment from overseas. [VERIFY: same testing and warranty wording as the R640 page]
Because the R620 is now past the manufacturer's mainstream support window, we are also the practical route to keeping one in service: we stock the caddies, DIMMs, controllers, rails and power supplies it needs, and our hardware support plans cover units the manufacturer no longer will. [VERIFY: parts stocked for this model]
If you need a specific configuration that is not listed, tell us the CPU, memory and drive layout you want and we will quote a build from stock. Custom configurations are usually ready within two working days. [VERIFY: lead time]
Same 1U shape, same 24 DIMM slots, same bay counts. The R630 is one generation newer: E5-2600 v3 and v4 processors with up to 22 cores against 12, DDR4 against DDR3, NVMe support on the 10-bay chassis, and iDRAC8 with an HTML5 console. The R620 is the cheaper of the two by a wide margin and is the right choice for a lab or a non-critical role; the R630 is the floor for production.
VMware ESXi up to 6.7, Proxmox VE (current releases still run), Hyper-V on Windows Server 2016, and XCP-ng. ESXi 7 and 8 do not support this generation. For a home lab or test bench, Proxmox is the common choice.
Yes. The sockets are the same. Update the BIOS to 2.0 or later first, then fit matching v2 CPUs. Existing 1600 MT/s memory keeps working; 1866 MT/s needs both a v2 CPU and DIMMs rated for it.
Up to 768 GB with 32 GB RDIMMs, or 1.5 TB with 64 GB LRDIMMs on v2 processors. All 24 slots are only available with both CPUs installed, and filling three DIMMs per channel drops the memory speed.
SATA and SAS SSDs, yes, in any bay. NVMe, no; the platform predates it. A PCIe SSD add-in card works in a slot if you need one fast volume.
PERC H710 for most roles, H710P if the array is mostly SSDs. For ZFS, Ceph or TrueNAS, an H310 flashed to IT mode gives direct disk access and is a well-trodden path on this platform.
No. The R620 is past end of life: no BIOS, iDRAC or driver updates, and no Dell support contracts. Parts remain plentiful and cheap, and ServerDove supports it directly with stock held in Doha and hardware support plans for units the manufacturer no longer will. Treat it as a lab and secondary-role machine rather than a production one.
Rack depth (allow around 800 mm including cabling), whether you need rails and a bezel, which chassis you need by drive count and type, and the iDRAC licence level. If you are not sure, send us the workload and we will suggest a configuration.
Yes. Delivery across Qatar is typically one day from Doha stock. Installation, racking, cabling and base configuration are available as a service, with a free site survey for rack builds. [VERIFY: same delivery and installation wording as the R640 page]
