About the HP Z640
HP Z640 compact dual-socket workstations in Doha: Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors, eight DDR4 ECC slots for up to 256 GB, a 925 W supply and two PCIe x16 slots in a 171 mm wide minitower. Tested, and delivered across Qatar from Doha stock.
The Z640 is the compact dual-socket member of HP's Z440, Z640 and Z840 workstation generation, built on the Intel C612 chipset with LGA2011-3 sockets. It takes one Intel Xeon E5-1600 v3 or v4 processor, or one or two E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors, with the second processor and its four DIMM slots carried on a plug-in riser module. HP rates the chassis at 4U when racked, and it is only 171 mm wide, so it gives two-processor throughput in the footprint of a single-socket tower. It suits CAD, rendering, simulation and engineering analysis where the software scales across cores but desk space or rack space is limited. Chassis and form factor
HP describes the Z640 as a rackable minitower in hematite brushed aluminium and HP black. It has an integrated front handle and a rear flip-up handle, tool-less access to the expansion cards, memory and system board, and a dedicated 9.5 mm slim optical bay. The front panel carries the power button, a drive activity LED and four USB 3.0 ports, the topmost with charging capability. The same chassis is used for single-processor and dual-processor builds; the difference is whether the second CPU and memory riser is fitted, which also takes away the top PCIe x1 slot.
Processors
The QuickSpecs list three processor families. A Z640 built with an E5-1600 series processor cannot take a second processor; only E5-2600 series systems can be expanded to two, and both processors must be identical. HP supplied the second processor as a kit containing the riser module, the processor and its heatsink, and states that upgrading the first processor (CPU0) is not supported by HP. Two v4 examples below are the models most often seen in refurbished units.

Lower-numbered parts such as the E5-2603 v4 and E5-2609 v4 run memory at 1866 MT/s and have no Turbo Boost. High-clock parts such as the E5-2637 v4 and E5-2643 v4 give fewer cores at 3.4 to 3.5 GHz, which suits single-threaded CAD work better than an 18-core part.
Memory
Eight DDR4 slots in total: four on the system board for the first processor and four on the optional riser for the second. Only ECC registered (RDIMM) and load-reduced (LRDIMM) modules are supported, and the two types cannot be mixed. Slots belonging to a processor that is not installed must be left empty, and a two-processor system with memory on only one processor is not a supported configuration.

HP lists DDR4-2133 and DDR4-2400 registered option kits for this platform. Memory runs at the lower of the module rating and the processor's supported speed, so 2400 MT/s modules only reach that speed behind an E5-2600 v4 or E5-1600 v4 processor. Each processor has four memory channels, so four matched DIMMs per processor gives the full bandwidth. ServerDove carries compatible registered modules in the server memory range.
Graphics
The QuickSpecs group the supported cards into professional 2D (NVIDIA NVS 310, NVS 315 and NVS 510), entry 3D (NVIDIA Quadro K420, K620 and P600, AMD FirePro W2100), mid-range 3D (Quadro K1200, K2200, M2000 and P2000, FirePro W4300 and W5100, Radeon Pro WX 4100), high-end 3D (Quadro M4000, M5000, M6000 24 GB, P4000 and P5000, FirePro W7100, Radeon Pro WX 7100) and ultra 3D (Quadro P6000 24 GB). Most cards can be fitted in pairs, but the Quadro M5000 and M6000 are limited to one card each in this chassis. The power supply provides two graphics power cables, and the two PCIe Gen3 x16 slots take full-length cards with the extender. The Quadro M2000 fitted to our stocked configuration is a single-slot mid-range card. Other cards are available in the graphics cards collection; send us the model you plan to use and we will confirm power and slot fit.
Storage
The Z640 has two internal 3.5-inch bays with acoustic dampening rails and two external 5.25-inch bays. A third and fourth 3.5-inch drive each take one external bay through an adapter; a third and fourth 2.5-inch drive share one external bay in a 2:1 carrier. The system board has six SATA 6 Gb/s ports with integrated RAID 0, 1, 10 and HP's RAID 0 Data (boot drive plus a two-drive stripe), and RAID 5 is listed among the factory-integrated options.

The SAS options are the LSI 9217-4i4e 8-port 6 Gb/s card and the LSI 9270-8i RAID-on-chip card with an optional iBBU09 battery. HP's build rules did not combine PCIe SSDs with a SAS controller or SAS drives, and PCIe SSDs cannot be used in a boot RAID set. Standard 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, as fitted to our stocked unit, are the simplest upgrade for an existing machine.

Open-ended connectors let a longer card sit in a shorter slot at the lower link width. Rear ports: four USB 3.0, two USB 2.0, two PS/2, one RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet on the integrated Intel I218LM controller, audio line in and line out, and a rear power button. A serial port is available through an optional bracket cabled to the board. Inside there is a 2x5 header for two USB 2.0 ports and a 2x10 header for one USB 3.0 port. Optional cards listed include the Intel I210-T1 and I350-T4 network adapters and an HP Thunderbolt 2 card.
Power supply
One tool-free 925 W supply rated at 90% efficiency, wide-ranging with active power factor correction, operating from 90 to 269 V AC at 47 to 66 Hz. It carries two graphics power cables. There is no redundant option and no lower-wattage variant listed for the Z640, so the same supply covers every configuration from a single E5-1600 processor to two 145 W E5-2600 v4 processors with two high-end cards.

HP shipped the Z640 with Windows 10 Pro 64-bit for Workstations, Windows 10 Pro with downgrade rights to Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, Windows 10 Home 64-bit (single-processor systems only), Windows 7 Professional 64-bit or Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit, or with the HP Installer Kit for Linux covering Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.6 and 7, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 and Ubuntu 14.04. Windows 7 and 8.1 Enterprise, RHEL Desktop 6 and 7, and SLED 11 SP3 and 12 are listed as supported. Later releases such as Windows 11 are outside HP's published support for this platform; ask us before buying if you need a particular operating system.

What is the difference between the HP Z640 and the Z840?
Same generation, same C612 chipset and the same E5-2600 v3 and v4 processors. The Z640 is a 171 mm wide minitower with eight DIMM slots, up to 256 GB of memory, four drives, two PCIe x16 slots and a 925 W supply. The Z840 is a full tower with sixteen DIMM slots, up to 1 TB of memory, five 3.5-inch or eight 2.5-inch drives, three PCIe x16 slots and a choice of 850 W or 1125 W supplies. Choose the Z640 when space matters and the Z840 when memory, drives or GPUs do.
How does the Z640 compare with the Z440?
The Z440 is the single-socket model of the same generation, with one LGA2011-3 socket, eight DIMM slots and a 700 W supply. The Z640 adds a second processor on a riser module, which brings the second set of four DIMM slots and lets it use the E5-2600 series. If your software scales across many cores, the Z640 is the step up; for single-threaded CAD an E5-1600 v4 Z440 or Z640 gives the same result at a lower cost.
Can I add a second processor to a Z640 later?
Only if the machine was built with an E5-2600 series processor. Systems with an E5-1600 series processor cannot take a second CPU. The upgrade needs HP's second CPU and memory riser module, an identical processor and its heatsink, and it occupies the top PCIe x1 slot. How much memory does the Z640 take?
Up to 256 GB, which needs two processors, all eight slots and 32 GB load-reduced DIMMs. With registered DIMMs the listed modules are 4, 8 and 16 GB, giving 64 GB per processor. RDIMMs and LRDIMMs cannot be mixed, and only ECC memory is supported. Fill four matched modules per processor for full bandwidth.
Does the Z640 support NVMe SSDs?
Yes, through HP Z Turbo Drive cards, which hold an M.2 NVMe SSD on a half-height PCIe card, and the Quad Pro carrier that takes up to four modules. The Intel 750 Series add-in card is also listed. There is no M.2 slot on the system board itself, and HP did not combine PCIe SSDs with the SAS controller options. SATA SSDs fit the standard 2.5-inch bays.
Which graphics cards fit the Z640?
HP's list runs from NVIDIA NVS and Quadro K-series cards up to the Quadro P5000, P6000 and M6000 24 GB, plus AMD FirePro W-series and Radeon Pro WX cards. Two PCIe Gen3 x16 slots and two graphics power cables allow a pair of most cards; the M5000 and M6000 are limited to one. For a card that is not on HP's list, tell us its length and power connectors and we will check the fit rather than guess.
Is the HP Z640 still supported by HP?
