Usually, provided versions line up. Panorama must run the same or a later PAN-OS version than the firewalls it manages, and the new unit must support the version you standardise on. Each firewall also needs its own registration and subscriptions with Palo Alto Networks. Check these points before ordering.

What do I need for a Palo Alto high-availability pair?

A high-availability pair should be two firewalls of the same model, running the same PAN-OS version, with matching licences and subscriptions. They also need connections between them for HA traffic. If you are buying a second unit to pair with an existing one, check the model and version before ordering.

Are Palo Alto licences included with the hardware?

Hardware and subscriptions are separate. Threat prevention, URL filtering, sandboxing and vendor support are licensed per device by Palo Alto Networks. Check what is active on the unit you are buying and confirm options, terms and the registration of a previously owned unit with Palo Alto or its partner before you rely on them.

Adding a unit to an existing Palo Alto estate

PAN-OS version: Panorama must run the same or a later version than the firewalls it manages. Check the new unit can run the version you use.
High availability: a pair should be the same model on the same PAN-OS version with matching licences.
Subscriptions: each unit carries its own, registered to its serial number with Palo Alto Networks.
Previously owned units: Palo Alto sets the rules for registering them, so confirm before ordering.

Around the firewall

A branch firewall is only part of the site. It needs switching behind it, and often PoE for phones, cameras and access points. Palo Alto does not make switches, so pair it with any standards-based switch from network switches. If the branch will connect back to head office by VPN, check the head-office firewall has capacity for another tunnel.
