A Power over Ethernet switch sends electrical power and data down the same cable, so IP phones, cameras, wireless access points and door entry units need no separate power supply at the device. That makes installation cheaper and lets you back up every device from one UPS in the rack.
The range currently holds Cisco Catalyst 2960-X and 3850 switches with 48 Gigabit PoE+ ports. It suits businesses and integrators in Qatar rolling out voice, CCTV or Wi-Fi, where many powered devices meet in one wiring closet.
| Standard | Name | At the switch port | At the device | Typical devices |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IEEE 802.3af | PoE | 15.4 W | 12.95 W | IP phones, fixed cameras |
| IEEE 802.3at | PoE+ | 30 W | 25.5 W | Wi-Fi access points, PTZ cameras, video phones |
| IEEE 802.3bt Type 3 | PoE++ | 60 W | 51 W | Multi-radio access points, small displays |
| IEEE 802.3bt Type 4 | PoE++ | 90 W | 71.3 W | Heated outdoor cameras, displays, thin clients |
Power is lost in the cable, which is why the device receives less than the port supplies. Some Cisco switches also offer UPOE, Cisco's own scheme for up to 60 W per port.
Every PoE switch has a total power budget shared across its ports, set by the power supply fitted. List each device, take its maximum draw from the datasheet and add them up. Compare the total with the switch budget and leave headroom for growth. If the budget runs short, the switch stops powering the lowest-priority ports.
PoE switches ship from Doha, typically reaching sites across Qatar in one day, and are covered by the ServerDove warranty. Cabling and installation are available as a service. Cameras and recorders are in surveillance, handsets in voice, and switch features are explained under managed switches. For higher-power or other-brand models, ask the team.
They are successive IEEE standards. PoE (802.3af) supplies up to 15.4 W per port, PoE+ (802.3at) up to 30 W, and PoE++ (802.3bt) up to 60 W for Type 3 or 90 W for Type 4, measured at the switch. Higher classes power more demanding devices such as multi-radio access points and heated outdoor cameras.
It depends on the switch's total power budget, not just its port count. Add the maximum draw of every device and compare it with the budget. For example, if each camera draws up to 12 W, twenty-four cameras need up to 288 W. Send your device list and the team will check it against a model.
Yes. The standards are backward compatible. A PoE+ port detects the device and its power class before supplying power, so an 802.3af phone or camera receives what it asks for and no more. This lets you mix older and newer powered devices on the same switch without extra hardware.
Yes, with standards-based PoE. The switch checks for a valid PoE signature before sending power, and a laptop, printer or PC that does not present one is treated as a normal data connection. Passive PoE injectors that skip this check are a different matter and should be used with care.
Up to 100 metres of cable, the same limit as standard Ethernet. Use Cat5e or better; for new installations with higher-power devices, Cat6 or Cat6a copes better with the heat in large cable bundles. Beyond 100 metres you need another switch, a PoE extender or fibre.
A single injector is fine for one or two devices at a desk. Once you have more than a few powered devices in one place, a PoE switch is tidier, easier to back up with a UPS and lets you see and reset power on each port remotely.
