RAID controllers with write cache use a battery or capacitor pack to protect data held in cache during a power cut. When that battery ages or fails, most controllers switch from write-back to write-through mode, and write performance drops noticeably until it is replaced.
This small range covers replacement cache batteries, including HPE Smart Storage Batteries, for administrators who have seen a battery warning or a sudden drop in write speed. Dell PERC batteries and other types can be sourced on request.
A failed battery does not by itself lose data. It removes the protection that lets the controller use its cache safely.
Cache batteries are specific to the controller family and the server they sit in. The connector, cable length and mounting position all vary. HPE uses a Smart Storage Battery mounted in the chassis and connected to the system board, while Dell PERC batteries are cabled to the controller itself.
Send the server model and the controller name, or a photo of the existing battery label, and the team will confirm the right replacement. Controllers themselves are in RAID Controllers.
Batteries ship from stock in Doha, typically reaching Qatar addresses in one day. Other storage spares, including caddies and cables, are in Parts & Accessories. Batteries are covered by the ServerDove warranty. To source a battery that is not listed, contact the team by WhatsApp on +974 5521 2108 or through the contact page.
It protects data held in the controller's write cache. With a healthy battery, the controller can confirm writes as soon as they reach cache, which is much faster than waiting for the drives. If power fails, the battery keeps the cached data safe, or powers a copy to flash, until it can be written to disk.
Most controllers detect the fault and switch the cache to write-through mode, so every write waits for the drives. Data stays safe, but write performance drops, most noticeably on RAID 5 and RAID 6 volumes. The server usually logs a warning. Forcing write-back caching without a working battery risks losing data in a power cut, so replace the battery instead.
No. The array configuration is stored on the controller and the drives, not in the battery. After a replacement, the new battery charges, the controller confirms it is healthy, and write-back caching is re-enabled. Until charging completes, the cache may stay in write-through mode, so allow some time before judging performance.
That depends on the controller family and the server it is fitted in, because connectors, cables and mounting positions differ. Send ServerDove the server model and the controller name, which you can find in iDRAC, iLO or the controller utility, or a photo of the existing battery label. The team will confirm the correct replacement before you order.
Because the controller has most likely disabled its write cache to protect your data. Without cache, each write has to reach the drives before it is confirmed, which slows databases, virtual machines and file servers. Replacing the battery and letting it charge normally restores the previous performance, provided nothing else has changed.
