The Z840 is the full-size dual-socket tower of HP's Z440, Z640 and Z840 generation, built on the Intel C612 chipset with two LGA2011-3 sockets for Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors. Sixteen DDR4 ECC slots give up to 1 TB of memory, seven PCIe slots take up to three double-width graphics cards or Tesla compute cards, an 8-port SAS controller sits on the board, and the 1125 W supply is rated to 1450 W on a 200 V mains such as Qatar's. HP rates it at 5U when racked. It is the machine for rendering farms in a box, simulation, GPU computing and video finishing where a Z640 runs out of slots or memory. ServerDove holds the Z840 as a dual-CPU barebone tower in Doha and builds it to order with processors, memory, drives and graphics.
A rackable tower in black and hematite, 444 mm high and 203 mm wide, with seven bays: four internal 3.5-inch bays with acoustic dampening rails, two external 5.25-inch bays and a slimline optical bay. The front carries four USB 3.0 ports, the top one with charging capability, a headset socket and a microphone socket. A barebone Z840, as we stock it, is this chassis with the system board, power supply and cooling fitted, ready for processors, memory, drives and a graphics card. Unlike the Z640, both processor sockets are on the main board rather than on a riser.
The Z840 takes only Xeon E5-2600 series processors, in the v3 (Haswell-EP) and v4 (Broadwell-EP) generations, one or two, and the second must match the first. Several slots and half the memory depend on the second processor being fitted, so most Z840s were sold with two. HP's QuickSpecs list these v4 processors; the v3 list covers the E5-2620 v3, E5-2630 v3 and E5-2643 v3 among others.
| Processor | Cores | Base clock | Memory speed | TDP | Power supply |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xeon E5-2603 v4 | 6 | 1.7 GHz | 1866 MT/s | 85 W | 850 W |

| Xeon E5-2623 v4 | 4 | 2.6 GHz | 2133 MT/s | 85 W | 850 W |
| Xeon E5-2630 v4 | 10 | 2.2 GHz | 2133 MT/s | 85 W | 850 W |
| Xeon E5-2640 v4 | 10 | 2.4 GHz | 2133 MT/s | 90 W | 850 W |
| Xeon E5-2650 v4 | 12 | 2.2 GHz | 2400 MT/s | 105 W | 850 W |
| Xeon E5-2660 v4 | 14 | 2.0 GHz | 2400 MT/s | 105 W | 850 W |
| Xeon E5-2637 v4 | 4 | 3.5 GHz | 2400 MT/s | 135 W | 1125 W required |
| Xeon E5-2643 v4 | 6 | 3.4 GHz | 2400 MT/s | 135 W | 1125 W required |
| Xeon E5-2667 v4 | 8 | 3.2 GHz | 2400 MT/s | 135 W | 1125 W required |
| Xeon E5-2680 v4 | 14 | 2.4 GHz | 2400 MT/s | 120 W | 1125 W required |
| Xeon E5-2683 v4 | 16 | 2.1 GHz | 2400 MT/s | 120 W | 1125 W required |
| Xeon E5-2687W v4 | 12 | 3.0 GHz | 2400 MT/s | 160 W | 1125 W required |
| Xeon E5-2690 v4 | 14 | 2.6 GHz | 2400 MT/s | 135 W | 1125 W required |
| Xeon E5-2695 v4 | 18 | 2.1 GHz | 2400 MT/s | 120 W | 1125 W required |
| Xeon E5-2697 v4 | 18 | 2.3 GHz | 2400 MT/s | 145 W | 1125 W required |
| Xeon E5-2699 v4 | 22 | 2.2 GHz | 2400 MT/s | 145 W | 1125 W required |
The power supply column matters when buying a barebone: HP requires the 1125 W supply for the E5-2643 v3 and for every v4 processor from the E5-2637 v4 upwards, as well as for the higher v3 parts (E5-2687W v3, E5-2690 v3, E5-2695 v3, E5-2697 v3 and E5-2699 v3). Two E5-2699 v4 processors give 44 cores in one workstation.
Sixteen DDR4 slots, eight per processor, on the main board. Only ECC registered (RDIMM) and load-reduced (LRDIMM) modules are supported and the two types cannot be mixed. Memory must not be fitted to the slots of an absent processor, and a two-processor system with memory on one processor only is not supported. The QuickSpecs list supported speeds of 1600, 1866 and 2133 MT/s on the board, with v4 processors able to run memory at 2400 MT/s.
| Module type | Capacities listed | Maximum system memory |
|---|---|---|
| DDR4 ECC RDIMM | 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB | 256 GB |
| DDR4 ECC LRDIMM | 32 GB, with 64 GB and 128 GB added after launch | 1024 GB |
Each processor has four memory channels, so populate in sets of four, or eight per processor, for full bandwidth. Compatible registered DDR4 is listed under server memory; tell us the processor generation so we match the speed.
The Z840 was qualified for the widest graphics list of its generation. The QuickSpecs group the cards as professional 2D (NVIDIA NVS 310, NVS 315, NVS 510), entry 3D (Quadro K420, K620, P600, AMD FirePro W2100), mid-range 3D (Quadro K1200, K2200, M2000, P2000, FirePro W4300 and W5100, Radeon Pro WX 4100), high-end 3D (Quadro M4000, M5000, M6000 in 12 GB and 24 GB, P4000, P5000, FirePro W7100, Radeon Pro WX 7100) and ultra 3D (Quadro P6000 24 GB). Up to three cards are supported for the K1200, M4000, M5000, P5000 and WX 7100, and up to two of the M6000 and P6000, with the third and fourth NVS cards possible through option kits. For compute, HP listed up to two NVIDIA Tesla K40 coprocessors alongside a display card, which requires the 1125 W chassis. The supply includes three 6-pin graphics power cables. Our graphics cards collection lists current stock; give us the card model and we will confirm slot spacing and power.
Drives connect to a six-port SATA 6 Gb/s controller with integrated RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and HP's RAID 0 Data, and to an integrated LSI SAS 2308 controller with eight 6 Gb/s SAS ports and RAID 0, 1, 1E and 10. The SAS ports can be brought out of the chassis with HP's bulkhead and back-panel connector kits for external enclosures. An LSI 9270-8i RAID-on-chip card with the iBBU09 battery was the hardware RAID option.
| Drive type | Maximum drives | Capacities listed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5-inch SATA 7200 rpm HDD | 5 | 500 GB to 4 TB | Internal bays plus one 5.25-inch bay |
| 3.5-inch SAS 15K HDD | 5 | 300 GB | Onboard SAS |
| 2.5-inch SAS 10K HDD | 8 | 300 GB to 1.2 TB | Needs the High Density Storage kit |
| 2.5-inch SATA SSD | 8 | 128 GB to 2 TB; Enterprise 240 GB and 480 GB | Needs the High Density Storage kit for more than the standard bays |
| HP Z Turbo Drive G2 (M.2 NVMe on a PCIe card) | Several via Quad Pro | 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB | PCIe slot; not for boot RAID |
| Intel 750 Series PCIe SSD | Listed | 400 GB, 800 GB, 1.2 TB | PCIe slot |
The HP 4-Bay SAS-SATA 2.5-inch High Density Storage kit converts two 3.5-inch bays into four tool-free 2.5-inch bays; two kits give the eight small-form-factor drives, including 15 mm enterprise SAS drives. A 4-in-1 SFF carrier for a 5.25-inch bay is also listed. All drives in a RAID set must be identical in size, speed and type.
| Slot | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | PCIe Gen3 x4 | |
| 2 | PCIe Gen3 x16 | Graphics |
| 3 | PCIe Gen3 x8 | Only with the second processor installed |
| 4 | PCIe Gen3 x16 | Only with the second processor installed |
| 5 | PCIe Gen2 x4, becomes Gen3 x8 | Upgrades to Gen3 x8 when the second processor is installed |
| 6 | PCIe Gen3 x16 | Graphics |
| 7 | PCIe Gen2 x1 |
The x8 connectors are open-ended, so an x16 card seats in them at x8. With a single processor only slots 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7 are live, which is the main reason to specify two. Rear ports: four USB 3.0, two USB 2.0, one serial, PS/2 keyboard and mouse, two RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet on the integrated Intel I218LM and I210AT controllers, audio line in (retaskable as microphone) and line out, and a rear power button. Internal headers give two USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 port. An Intel I210-T1 adapter and an HP Thunderbolt 2 card are among the listed options.
Two supplies: 850 W at 88% efficiency, or 1125 W at 90% efficiency, both wide-ranging with active power factor correction and two 80 mm fans. The 1125 W supply delivers 1275 W when the input is above 105 V and 1450 W when it is above 200 V, which is the case on Qatar's 240 V mains. HP requires it for the higher processors, for the Tesla K40, and it is the sensible choice for two or three high-end graphics cards. Check which supply a barebone carries before choosing processors.

Installation and base configuration are available as a service, business customers can request bulk quotations, and we answer on WhatsApp (+974 5521 2108), at sales@serverdove.com and through the contact page.
Same processors, chipset and graphics list. The Z840 is 203 mm wide and rated 5U, with sixteen DIMM slots for up to 1 TB, seven PCIe slots including three x16, onboard 8-port SAS, up to eight 2.5-inch drives and a choice of 850 W or 1125 W supplies. The Z640 is 171 mm wide, 4U, with eight DIMM slots for up to 256 GB, two x16 slots, four drives and a single 925 W supply. Pick the Z840 for memory, drives and multiple GPUs.
The Z820 is the previous generation: Xeon E5-2600 (first series) processors, DDR3 memory up to 512 GB and the C602 chipset. The Z840 moves to E5-2600 v3 and v4 processors with up to 22 cores each, DDR4 up to 1 TB, the C612 chipset, USB 3.0 throughout and HP Z Turbo Drive NVMe options. The chassis dimensions and the 850 W and 1125 W supply choices are near identical, so the Z840 is the same class of machine with several years of newer parts.
HP requires it for the E5-2643 v3 and for the E5-2637 v4, E5-2643 v4, E5-2667 v4, E5-2680 v4, E5-2683 v4, E5-2687W v4, E5-2690 v4, E5-2695 v4, E5-2697 v4 and E5-2699 v4, and for the Tesla K40. The 850 W unit covers the E5-2603 v4 to E5-2660 v4 with one or two mid-range graphics cards. On Qatar's 240 V mains the 1125 W supply delivers up to 1450 W.
Up to 256 GB with registered DIMMs (4, 8 and 16 GB modules) or 1 TB with load-reduced DIMMs, which HP listed at 32 GB at launch and later at 64 GB and 128 GB. All sixteen slots need both processors installed. RDIMMs and LRDIMMs cannot be mixed, and memory must be fitted for both processors in a dual system.
Slots 3 and 4 are wired to the second processor and are dead without it, and slot 5 only reaches PCIe Gen3 x8 when the second processor is fitted. A single-processor Z840 has slots 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7 available. Adding a matching second processor, with memory in its slots, brings the whole board to life.
Yes. HP lists up to three of the Quadro K1200, M4000, M5000, P5000 and Radeon Pro WX 7100, two of the M6000 and P6000, and up to two Tesla K40 coprocessors alongside a display card in the 1125 W chassis. Three PCIe Gen3 x16 slots and three 6-pin graphics power cables are provided. Tell us the exact cards and we will check spacing and power before you order.
Five 3.5-inch SATA or SAS drives using the internal bays and a 5.25-inch bay, or up to eight 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drives and SSDs with two of HP's 4-bay High Density Storage kits, each of which converts two 3.5-inch bays into four tool-free 2.5-inch bays. PCIe NVMe storage through Z Turbo Drive cards sits on top of that.
Yes. Stock is held in Doha and delivery across Qatar is typically one day. We can build the barebone to your specification before it leaves, and installation, cabling and base configuration are available as a service. Business customers can request a bulk quotation, and the hardware is covered by the ServerDove warranty with extended cover on request.
