A managed switch can be configured and monitored, unlike a plug-and-play unmanaged switch. It lets you split one physical network into separate VLANs for staff, guests, phones and cameras, prioritise voice traffic, bond links for extra bandwidth and resilience, and see what is happening on each port.
The range currently consists of Cisco Catalyst 2960-X and 3850 switches with 48 Gigabit PoE+ ports. It is for businesses in Qatar whose network has grown past a flat office LAN, and for integrators building segmented networks for clients.
| Type | How it is configured | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Unmanaged | Not configurable; every port is in one network | A few extra ports at a desk or small office |
| Smart or web-managed | Web interface with basic VLANs and QoS | Small sites with simple separation needs |
| Fully managed | Command line, web and SNMP, with full VLAN, security and monitoring features | Business networks with voice, CCTV, guest Wi-Fi or several departments |
A Layer 2 switch forwards traffic by MAC address within each VLAN. Traffic between VLANs must then pass through a router or firewall. A Layer 3 switch can route between VLANs itself, in hardware, which keeps internal traffic off the router and suits larger sites. Many networks use Layer 2 switches at the access layer and a Layer 3 switch or router at the core. If you are unsure which your design needs, describe it to the team.
Managed switches ship from Doha stock, typically reaching sites across Qatar in one day. Refurbished units are tested before listing and covered by the ServerDove warranty. Base configuration is available as a service. Switches that also power devices are in PoE switches, and the Cisco line in Cisco switches. For other brands, contact the team.
An unmanaged switch simply connects devices, with no settings to change. A managed switch can be configured: you can create VLANs, set traffic priorities, control which devices may connect, aggregate links and monitor ports remotely. Managed switches cost more but give you control and visibility that a growing network needs.
If the office runs IP phones, CCTV, guest Wi-Fi or anything that should be kept apart from staff computers, a managed switch is usually worth it, because VLANs keep that traffic separate. A handful of desktops and a printer on one network can manage without one.
A VLAN (virtual LAN, defined in IEEE 802.1Q) divides one physical switch into several isolated networks. Devices in different VLANs cannot talk directly unless a router, firewall or Layer 3 switch allows it. Businesses use VLANs to separate voice, cameras, guests and departments, and to limit how far a problem spreads.
A Layer 3 switch combines switching with routing, so it can pass traffic between VLANs without sending it through a separate router. It is normally used at the core or distribution layer of a network. Access switches that connect users are often Layer 2, with routing done centrally.
Yes. Base configuration is available as a service, alongside installation, racking and cabling. Share your VLAN and addressing plan with the order and the switch can arrive ready for your team to complete and connect. This saves time on site, especially when several switches go into one building.
The range in stock is currently Cisco Catalyst. Managed switches from other vendors can be sourced on request. Send the port count, speeds, PoE needs and preferred brand by WhatsApp on +974 5521 2108 or to sales@serverdove.com, and the team will quote.
