A network switch connects the devices on a local network and forwards traffic only to the port it is meant for. Switches range from small unmanaged desktop units to rack-mounted managed switches with PoE, fibre uplinks and routing, and on to high-speed switches that link servers in a data centre.
This page explains the choices. Switches currently in stock are listed in the managed, PoE and Cisco ranges, and the team can source other brands, port counts and speeds on request. It is for IT teams and integrators in Qatar planning a new network, a closet refresh or a server-room upgrade.
| Role | Where it sits | Typical ports |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Wiring closet, connecting users, phones and cameras | 24 or 48 copper Gigabit ports, often PoE, with SFP or SFP+ uplinks |
| Distribution and core | Aggregates access switches and routes between VLANs | 10G SFP+ or faster fibre ports, Layer 3 |
| Data centre top-of-rack | Top of each server rack | 10G or 25G server ports with 40G or 100G uplinks |
Multigigabit ports, running at 2.5G or 5G over existing copper, are common where fast Wi-Fi access points connect.
For stocked models, see managed switches, PoE switches and Cisco switches. For anything else, send the requirement by WhatsApp on +974 5521 2108, email sales@serverdove.com or use the contact page. Whatever the source, the team can also install, rack, cable and apply base configuration to the switch as a service.
Unmanaged switches simply connect devices. Smart or web-managed switches add basic VLANs and QoS. Fully managed switches add full configuration, security and monitoring, and Layer 3 models also route between networks. PoE switches power devices through the cable, and data centre switches focus on high-speed server links.
Count every wired device at the location, including phones, cameras, access points, printers and uplinks to other switches, then add spare capacity for growth. Access switches usually come in 24-port and 48-port versions, and two switches can be used where one is not enough.
1G (Gigabit) ports suit most desktops, phones and cameras. Multigigabit ports run at 2.5G or 5G over existing Cat5e or Cat6 copper and suit fast Wi-Fi access points. 10G ports, on copper or SFP+ fibre, are used for servers, storage and links between switches.
Uplink ports connect a switch to the rest of the network, usually a core switch or router. They are often faster than the user ports and commonly take SFP or SFP+ transceivers for fibre or direct-attach links. Uplink speed limits how much traffic the whole switch can send onwards.
It describes the direction the fans move air through the switch. In a data centre rack, the switch airflow must match the hot and cold aisle layout, or it will draw in hot exhaust air. Some switches offer either direction through different fan or power supply modules.
Yes. Send the brand or model if you know it, or describe the port count, speeds, PoE needs and management requirements. The team will source a suitable switch and quote. Business customers can also request a quotation for bulk orders.
