The 8851 is an audio-only model in the 8800 Series. The video models in the series are the 8845 and 8865. The second Ethernet port passes a PC connection through the phone, so one cable run serves both the phone and the workstation.
Installation
Connect the network port on the phone to a PoE switch port. The phone powers on and requests an address by DHCP. Place the switch port in a voice VLAN and enable CDP or LLDP, so the phone learns the voice VLAN automatically. Connect the workstation to the PC port to share the same cable run.
Before the phone will register, add it to your call-control platform by its MAC address, which is printed on the label under the base. The phone then downloads its configuration and firmware from the provisioning server. If a phone has been used on another system, a factory reset clears the previous settings and security trust list. When fitting key expansion modules, check that the switch port can supply the extra power the phone draws.

The K9 part number is the enterprise variant, intended for Cisco call control such as Unified Communications Manager. Cisco sells a separate multiplatform variant of the 8851, with a different part number, for third-party SIP platforms and hosted services. If the phone is going onto a non-Cisco PBX, confirm firmware support for that platform before deployment rather than assuming generic SIP registration.
How is the Cisco 8851 powered?
The phone is a PoE powered device and takes power from the switch port it connects to, which is the usual arrangement in offices. Where the switch does not provide PoE, Cisco's CP-PWR-CUBE-4 local power supply can be used instead. Attaching key expansion modules or charging devices from the USB port increases the power draw, so check the PoE budget and class on the access switch.
Can I connect my PC through the phone?
Yes. The 8851 has an integrated two-port Ethernet switch, both ports running at 10/100/1000. One port goes to the wall or switch, the other to the PC, so both devices share a single cable drop. Because the ports are Gigabit, the PC is not limited to 100 Mb/s as it would be behind older Fast Ethernet phones.
How many expansion modules does the 8851 support?
The 8851 supports up to two key expansion modules, which add extra programmable keys for lines, speed dials and busy lamp field monitoring. This suits receptionists, attendants and team leads who need to see many extensions at once. The audio KEM used with the 8851 and 8861 is the CP-8800-A-KEM.
What is the difference between the 8851 and the 8861?
Both share the 5-inch colour display and Gigabit switch. The 8861 adds built-in Wi-Fi, a second USB port, an MP3 audio output and support for up to three expansion modules. The 8851 suits wired desks where Bluetooth, one USB port and two KEMs are sufficient, while the 8811 below it drops the colour screen, Bluetooth and USB.
Can I use a wireless headset with the 8851?
Yes. The 8851 has Bluetooth for pairing a wireless headset, and a USB port that can be used for a USB headset. It also has a dedicated wired headset port. Bluetooth can also be used to pair a mobile phone with the desk phone, depending on the call control features enabled on the platform.
