This is a refurbished Cisco Catalyst 3850 48 port Gigabit PoE+ switch, sold under our SKU SW-CISCO-3850-48P-POE. The Catalyst 3850 is Cisco's stackable enterprise access platform, introduced in 2013 and running Cisco IOS XE. This unit has 48 Gigabit Ethernet ports, each able to supply PoE+ power, and 4 SFP uplink ports for links to a distribution or core switch. It is a Layer 3 managed switch, so it can route between VLANs at the access layer instead of sending that traffic upstream. Buyers in Doha and across Qatar use it to power wireless access points, IP phones and IP cameras from the wiring closet, or to add another member to an existing Catalyst 3850 stack through Cisco StackWise. A refurbished unit is a practical way to expand or replace a switch in an established Cisco network without changing platforms or retraining staff.

Installation
Mount the switch in a standard 19 inch rack using the rack brackets, and leave clear space at the front and rear so the fan modules can move air freely. The uplink ports need SFP transceivers matched to your fibre type and link distance, or copper SFPs for short runs to a nearby switch. To join an existing stack, power the new unit off, connect the stack cables so the members form a closed ring, then power it on; the stack elects an active switch and the new member takes its configuration from it. Make sure every member runs the same Cisco IOS XE release before it joins, otherwise it will not merge into the stack. The PoE budget depends on the power supply fitted, so add up the draw of your access points, phones and cameras and fit a second supply in the spare slot if you need more power or redundancy.

Each port supports PoE+ to IEEE 802.3at, providing up to 30 W at the port. Not every port can draw 30 W at the same time. The total PoE budget depends on the power supplies installed in the two power supply bays, and StackPower can pool capacity across a stack.
Can the Catalyst 3850 stack with a Catalyst 3750-X?
No. The 3850 uses StackWise-480 and the 3750-X uses StackWise Plus, and the two stacking technologies use different cables and are not interoperable. A 3850 stack can contain up to nine Catalyst 3850 switches. It is managed as a single switch with one configuration and one management address.
Is the Catalyst 3850 a Layer 3 switch?
Yes, the hardware supports Layer 3 forwarding. The routing features available depend on the IOS XE licence. LAN Base is aimed at access-layer switching with limited routing. IP Base adds routing features suited to the access and distribution layers. IP Services enables the full set, including protocols such as OSPF and BGP.
What are the uplink ports on this switch?
This unit has 4x SFP uplink ports. These accept standard 1G SFP transceivers for fibre or copper connections to a distribution switch, core switch or another closer. On the Catalyst 3850 the uplinks are provided by a field-replaceable network module at the front of the switch.
What operating system does the Catalyst 3850 run?
It runs Cisco IOS XE, which offers a CLI familiar to anyone who has configured other Catalyst switches. Management is available over SSH, SNMP and the serial console. A dedicated Ethernet management port allows out-of-band access separate from the data ports.
How much rack space does the switch need?
The Catalyst 3850 48-port switch is a 1U device for a standard 19-inch rack. Stacking cables connect at the rear. Leave rear access in the cabinet for the stack cables, StackPower cables and the hot-swappable power supplies and fans.
What does refurbished mean at ServerDove?
