Dell PowerEdge R620 8 x 2.5 inch SFF rack server barebone, a refurbished 1U dual Xeon E5-2600 v1 and v2 chassis with iDRAC7.
The PowerEdge R620 is Dell's 12th generation 1U rack server, built for the first Intel Xeon E5-2600 processors and their v2 successors in LGA2011 sockets. It carries 8 x 2.5 inch SFF hot-plug bays across the front, 24 DIMM slots for DDR3 ECC Registered memory, PCIe 3.0 expansion and integrated iDRAC7 for remote management. It is supplied with no CPU, no RAM and no drives. Two generations behind the current Dell range, the R620 is the low cost dual socket server: E5-2600 v2 processors with up to twelve cores and DDR3 RDIMMs are inexpensive and plentiful, so a full build costs a fraction of a newer platform. Buyers in Qatar use this refurbished chassis for lab clusters, test environments, backup servers and any role where the workload has not changed since the server was new. The R620 was the first 1U PowerEdge to reach 24 DIMM slots, which is why it remains useful: memory capacity that once cost a great deal is now cheap on DDR3. The platform below is the 12th generation as Dell built it.
What you need to add
Everything for this chassis is DDR3 era. Parts from 13th generation servers, which moved to DDR4 and a different socket, will not fit, so check the generation of anything on the shelf before planning around it.
- One or two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v1 or v2 processors with R620 heatsinks
- DDR3 ECC Registered DIMMs, four per processor to use every memory channel, up to 24 in total
- 2.5 inch SAS, SATA or SSD drives in Dell 12th generation hot-plug caddies
- A PERC RAID controller or HBA, unless one is already fitted to the board
- Dell hot-plug power supplies for the R620, two for redundancy
v2 processors need system firmware from 2013 or later, and the two processors must be from the same family. iDRAC7 needs the Enterprise licence for remote console; without it, management is limited to monitoring and power control.
Compatibility
The R620 shares processors, memory, caddies and power supplies with the other 12th generation PowerEdge servers, so an existing estate of that generation can supply its spares.
