About this barebone

Dell Precision T7820 workstation barebone, a dual-socket LGA3647 tower for building a custom Intel Xeon Scalable workstation.

This is a refurbished Dell Precision T7820 barebone, SKU WS-DELL-T7820-BARE, supplied without processors, memory or drives. Dell sells the platform as the Precision 7820 Tower, a dual-socket workstation from the 2017 Precision generation, built on the Intel C621 chipset with two LGA3647 sockets for Xeon Scalable processors. It takes DDR4 ECC registered memory, PCIe 3.0 expansion cards, and NVMe or SATA storage, SSD or HDD. Buyers in Qatar choose the barebone when they already hold processors and memory, or want to specify them for the workload: CAD and simulation, rendering, video editing, or a small virtualisation host that sits under a desk. Starting from the chassis lets an IT team or reseller in Doha standardise on one platform and vary the CPU, RAM and drive choice for each user or department.

Chassis and platform

The T7820 belongs to the Xeon Scalable generation of Precision towers, launched in 2017 alongside the larger 7920. The second socket is what separates it from single-processor workstations, and the C621 chipset gives it the same server-class platform as contemporary dual-socket servers.

What you need to add

The barebone is the chassis and motherboard platform. To bring it up as a working system, plan for the following parts:

  • Processors: one or two Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs for LGA3647. In a dual build both must be the same model and stepping.
  • Memory: DDR4 ECC registered RDIMMs, fitted in balanced sets across each processor's channels.
  • Storage: NVMe SSDs for boot and working data, SATA SSDs or HDDs for capacity.
  • Graphics card: Xeon Scalable processors have no integrated graphics, so a discrete PCIe graphics card is needed for display output.
  • Any add-in cards the workload needs, such as faster network adapters or additional storage controllers, in the PCIe 3.0 slots.

Compatibility

The platform follows the standard Xeon Scalable rules for processors and memory, so most compatibility questions come down to socket, memory type and BIOS level.

Expansion cardsPCIe cardsRun at PCIe 3.0 speed

Second generation Xeon Scalable processors need a BIOS release that supports them, so update the BIOS with a first generation CPU fitted before changing to a newer one. Do not mix registered memory with unbuffered or non-ECC modules; the system will not complete its memory check. Keep DIMM sizes and speeds identical across both processors for the best memory bandwidth. PCIe 4.0 cards will work in the slots but at PCIe 3.0 speed.

Why buy refurbished

Enterprise hardware, tested in Doha, at a fraction of the price of new

Every unit we sell has already proven itself in a data centre. We test it again, grade it, and back it with a warranty before it leaves our stock.

Talk to our team

Tested before it ships

POST, burn-in, memory and power-supply checks on every unit. Anything that fails is repaired or pulled from stock, not sold.

Same performance, lower cost

A Xeon runs the same workloads whether it is new or two years old. Spend the difference on more CPUs, memory or storage.

In stock, not on order

New enterprise hardware can take weeks or months to arrive. Ours is on the shelf in Doha and delivered across Qatar within a day.

Warranty and local support

Every unit is covered. Installation, configuration and hardware support are handled by our own team in Qatar, not a call centre abroad.
