HPE part 651687-001 is the 2.5 inch small form factor SmartDrive carrier, the tray that holds a SAS or SATA hard drive or SSD in the hot-plug SFF bays of ProLiant Gen8, Gen9 and Gen10 servers, including the DL360, DL380 and ML350 series. One carrier design serves all three generations, so a single part covers most of the ProLiant servers still in service. It is refurbished and supplied empty. Specification
The SmartDrive carrier's face carries a status ring and icons showing activity, fault, rebuild and a warning not to remove the drive while an array depends on it, all driven from the backplane. Carriers from G7 and earlier servers are a different design and will not latch in these bays, and Gen10 Plus servers moved to a newer basic carrier, so this tray fits Gen8 through Gen10 only. It carries 7mm and 15mm drives alike.
Installation
Fasten the drive into the carrier with the four side screws, connector towards the rear, remove the blank from the target bay, slide the carrier in with the handle open until it stops and close the handle to seat the drive; the controller detects it within seconds. Blanks belong in empty bays to keep airflow across the cage, and the carrier's screws are reused when a drive is replaced.
