The Xeon Gold 6136 is a 12-core, 24-thread processor from Intel's first generation Xeon Scalable family, code name Skylake-SP, for the LGA3647 socket. It runs at 3.00 GHz base and 3.70 GHz turbo, with 24.75 MB of L3 cache and a 150 W TDP. In Dell's range it fits 14th generation PowerEdge servers such as the R640, R740, R740xd and R840. We supply it refurbished from Doha under SKU CPU-INTEL-XEON-6136. Buyers in Qatar choose it when a server needs high clock speed per core rather than the highest core count: per-core licensed software, databases, EDA and simulation tools, and virtualised hosts where single-thread response matters. Some chassis restrict 150 W processors in certain drive bay or fan configurations, most often in dense front-loaded builds. The R640 and R740 shipped with both first and second generation Xeon Scalable processors, and a server built later may need a BIOS level that supports this part.
Specification
The 6136 sits at the high-frequency end of the 12-core Skylake-SP range. Plan sustained workloads around the 3.00 GHz base clock; turbo applies to lightly threaded work within the thermal limit. Memory capacity and PCIe lanes are per socket, so a dual-socket server has 96 lanes and up to 1.5 TB of memory.
Installation
The processor is not hot-pluggable: shut the server down, remove the power cords and wait for the standby LEDs to go out before opening the chassis. On LGA3647 servers the CPU clips into a plastic carrier that attaches to the heatsink, and the assembly is lowered onto the socket and tightened in the sequence marked on the heatsink, with old thermal compound cleaned off and fresh compound applied. Each installed processor needs its own heatsink and, on many servers, an additional fan, and its six memory channels should be populated with matching DIMMs for full bandwidth. Update the BIOS to a release that supports first generation Xeon Scalable processors before swapping or adding CPUs.

How does the Gold 6136 compare with the Gold 6146?
Both have 12 cores and 24.75 MB of L3 cache. The Gold 6146 runs at 3.20 GHz base and 4.20 GHz turbo with a 165W TDP. The Gold 6136 runs at 3.00 GHz base and 3.70 GHz turbo at 150W. The 6136 asks less of the cooling system and is accepted by more chassis configurations.
What memory does the Xeon Gold 6136 support?
It supports DDR4 memory at up to 2666 MT/s across six channels per socket. Each socket addresses up to 768 GB. Servers using this processor take registered or load-reduced ECC DIMMs. For full memory bandwidth, populate all six channels on each installed CPU with matching modules.
Can I mix a Gold 6136 with a different CPU in a dual-socket server?
No. Multi-socket Xeon Scalable systems require identical processors in every socket: the same model and the same stepping. To add a second CPU to a server already running a Gold 6136, use another Gold 6136. The second socket also needs its own heatsink and, on many servers, an additional fan.
Does the Gold 6136 work in four-socket servers?
Yes. Xeon Gold 6100 series processors have three UPI links and support up to four sockets. This processor is therefore used in quad-socket systems such as the Dell PowerEdge R840. Silver and Bronze series parts are limited to two sockets.
Will the Gold 6136 fit a second generation Xeon Scalable server?
Second generation Xeon Scalable (Cascade Lake) platforms use the same LGA3647 socket. Most of those servers also accept first generation processors with a suitable BIOS. Examples include the PowerEdge R640 and R740, which shipped with both generations. Confirm support on the specific server model, as some later platforms accept only second generation parts.
How many PCIe lanes does the Xeon Gold 6136 provide?
Each processor provides 48 PCIe 3.0 lanes, giving 96 lanes in a dual-socket server. How those lanes reach slots, NVMe backplanes and onboard controllers depends on the server's riser and motherboard design. Some slots may only be active when the second CPU is installed.
