Samsung M393A4K40DB2-CVF 32GB DDR4-2933 ECC Registered DIMM, a dual-rank 2Rx4 memory module for Xeon Scalable servers.
The Samsung M393A4K40DB2-CVF is a 32GB DDR4 registered ECC DIMM. The full label reads M393A4K40DB2-CVFBY and carries the industry designation PC4-2933Y-R, with a module bandwidth of PC4-23400. It is a dual-rank 2Rx4 module on a 288-pin connector, running at 1.2V with CL21 timing. Dell uses this type of RDIMM in its 14th-generation PowerEdge servers, including the R440, R540, R640, R740 and R740xd. These take 1st and 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors. IT teams in Doha and across Qatar buy this refurbished module for two reasons. Some need to replace a failed DIMM with an identical part number. Others need to add capacity to a virtualisation host or database server without changing the memory type already fitted. The x4 organisation also lets supported platforms use advanced error correction that can tolerate the loss of a whole DRAM device.
SD-RAM-SAM-32GB-2933-DB2CVFWill it fit my system?
All five are Dell 14th-generation PowerEdge two-socket rack servers that take registered DDR4. The speed the module reaches depends on the processor fitted and the number of DIMMs per channel.
| Server | Generation | Note |
|---|---|---|
| PowerEdge R440 | 14th generation | 1U rack |
| PowerEdge R540 | 14th generation | 2U rack |
| PowerEdge R640 | 14th generation | 1U rack |
| PowerEdge R740 | 14th generation | 2U rack |
| PowerEdge R740xd | 14th generation | 2U rack, storage-dense |
Do not mix RDIMMs with LRDIMMs or unbuffered memory in the same server. Existing DDR4-2666 RDIMMs can share the system, but the memory bus then runs at the speed of the slowest module.
Specification
The 2933 MT/s rating is the highest memory speed of 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable processors. 1st Gen Xeon Scalable processors support up to 2666 MT/s. On those systems, or with more DIMMs per channel, the module clocks down automatically, which is normal behaviour.
Installation
Memory is not hot-plug. Shut the server down, remove the power cords and wait for standby power to drain before opening the cover. Handle the module by its edges with an anti-static strap. Align the notch with the key in the slot, then press down until both ejector clips close. Follow Dell's population order for the chassis, filling the same slot positions on each processor so channels stay balanced. After first boot, check that the new capacity appears in the BIOS and iDRAC inventory. Fit matched sets of the same part number where possible so ranks and timings stay uniform.

Ask on WhatsApp sales@serverdove.comWhat type of memory is the Samsung M393A4K40DB2-CVF?
It is a 32GB DDR4 ECC Registered DIMM (RDIMM) rated at 2933 MT/s, labelled PC4-2933Y-R. The module is dual-rank with x4 DRAM organisation (2Rx4) and runs at 1.2V. It uses the standard 288-pin DDR4 DIMM form factor found in servers and workstations that support registered memory.
Is this module compatible with the Dell PowerEdge R640 and R740?
Yes. The Dell PowerEdge R640, R740, R740xd, R440 and R540 support 32GB DDR4 ECC Registered RDIMMs of this specification. Check your processor model, BIOS version and Dell's memory population rules before installing. The speed the module runs at is set by the processor and the number of DIMMs per channel.
Will it run at 2933 MT/s in my server?
Only if the platform supports that speed. 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors support DDR4-2933, and the module can run at its rated speed on them with suitable population. 1st Gen Xeon Scalable processors top out lower, so the module clocks down to the highest speed the system allows. This is normal behaviour and does not indicate a fault.
What does the full part number M393A4K40DB2-CVFBY mean?
M393A4K40DB2-CVF is the core Samsung model, and the -CVF suffix denotes the 2933 MT/s speed grade. The extra characters on the full label, M393A4K40DB2-CVFBY, are Samsung's ordering suffix. Both refer to the same 32GB 2Rx4 DDR4-2933 registered module. When matching existing memory, the core part number and the PC4-2933Y-R label designation are the key details to compare.
Can I mix this RDIMM with LRDIMMs or unbuffered memory?
No. Registered DIMMs cannot be mixed with load-reduced DIMMs (LRDIMMs) in the same system. Unbuffered DIMMs and non-ECC desktop memory are not interchangeable with RDIMMs either. Server memory controllers expect all installed modules to share the same buffering type. For the best results, populate channels with matching 32GB 2Rx4 RDIMMs as your server's guidelines recommend.
Can I mix it with DDR4-2666 RDIMMs already in my server?
Generally, yes. Most server platforms will run mixed-speed RDIMMs of the same type, but the memory bus drops to the speed of the slowest module installed. Mixing ranks or capacities can also limit population options or affect performance. Matching modules of the same part number gives the most predictable results and keeps the configuration easy to maintain.
What does 2Rx4 mean for this module?
2R means the module is dual-rank: it has two sets of DRAM chips that the memory controller addresses in turn. x4 means each DRAM chip has a 4-bit data width. The x4 organisation is preferred in servers because it allows advanced error-correction modes that can tolerate a complete DRAM device failure on platforms that support them.
Does this memory work in desktop PCs?
Standard consumer desktop motherboards do not support registered ECC memory, so this module is not suitable for typical desktop systems. It is designed for servers and workstations whose processors and chipsets support DDR4 RDIMMs, such as Intel Xeon Scalable based systems. Check that your platform specifically lists registered DDR4 support before purchasing.
