Specification
The rank describes how the chips are organised on the module. Single rank modules load the memory channel less, which lets a channel hold more of them at full speed; mixing ranks in one channel is allowed on these platforms but the BIOS may reduce speed.
Installation
With the server off and unplugged, fit the module in the next slot of the population sequence for its processor, matching rank and speed to the neighbours in the same channel. Press down until both clips latch. Boot into the BIOS and confirm the new capacity; if the reported speed drops, a rank mismatch within a channel is the usual cause, and moving the module to an empty channel resolves it.
