Every Dell PowerEdge ships with iDRAC and every HPE ProLiant ships with iLO. Both are small dedicated computers built into the server, running independently of the operating system — which means they work when the OS has crashed, when the server won't boot, and even when the machine is powered off but still plugged in.
What separates a genuinely useful remote management setup from a frustrating one isn't the brand. It's the licence tier. The feature that matters most — a full graphical console letting you watch POST, fix a BIOS setting, or install an operating system remotely — sits behind the paid tier on both platforms. Buy a refurbished server without checking which tier it carries, and you may discover the limitation at exactly the wrong moment.

Both free tiers cover a genuine amount of ground. For a server in the next room, Express or Standard is often enough — you can see why it's alarming and power-cycle it without a crash cart. The paid tier earns its cost when the server is somewhere you'd rather not drive to.
Strip away the marketing and the paid tiers cluster around two capabilities that matter enormously in one specific scenario: the machine is far away and something has gone wrong.
Virtual Console / Remote Console
A full graphical KVM in your browser, live from POST onward. Watch the boot sequence, enter BIOS, catch a boot loop, drive an OS installer — exactly as if you were standing at the rack with a monitor and keyboard.
Virtual Media
Mount an ISO from your own laptop as though it were a DVD in the server's drive. Combined with the console, this means bare-metal OS installation, recovery, and firmware work from anywhere in the world.
Together these two turn the BMC from a monitoring tool into a genuine replacement for physical access. Installing Proxmox or Windows Server on a machine in another building, recovering a failed boot, or changing a BIOS setting that requires a reboot — all become browser tasks.

The honest verdict: they're close enough that neither should decide your server purchase. Both have modern HTML5 interfaces, both support Redfish, both gate console access behind a paid tier at broadly comparable cost. Dell's Lifecycle Controller is a genuine advantage for firmware updates and configuration without extra licensing. HPE's interface is widely regarded as slightly more polished. Neither difference outweighs price, specification, or availability when choosing hardware.
This is the part that matters most when buying refurbished, and the part most buyers skip. The good news: BMC licences install onto the server itself and routinely survive resale — a used server that shipped with iDRAC Enterprise usually still has it.
