Server Rack Buying Guide: Depth, PDUs, Cable Management and Airflow
A rack has to outlast everything else in the server room. Buy a shallow one to save money...
Dell PowerEdge T160 compact tower server in Doha. One Intel Xeon 6300 or E-2400 series processor, four DDR5 slots, up to five drive bays, BOSS-N1 boot and iDRAC9 in a chassis under 17 litres with a filter bezel. Delivered across Qatar.
The T160 is Dell's entry tower server for small businesses and near-edge sites: a single-processor PowerEdge in a chassis under 17 litres, made to sit on a desk, a shelf or in a back office rather than a rack. Introduced in 2025, it takes one Intel Xeon 6300 series or Xeon E-2400 series processor (or a Pentium G7400 for the lightest duties), four DDR5 UDIMM slots, up to three 3.5-inch and two 2.5-inch drives, and the same iDRAC9 management as the rest of the PowerEdge range. Dell positions it for mail and messaging, collaboration and file sharing, and near-edge applications in warehouses and retail offices; the filter bezel is there because those are dusty places. ServerDove stocks configured T160 systems in Doha and can build other configurations to order.
There is one T160 chassis, an unpainted plated-steel tower partly made from recycled steel, with a front filter bezel that keeps dust and grease off the components. Dell rates it as a 3U tower. Two drive layouts are offered:
| Layout | Drives | Interface | Maximum capacity (Dell spec sheet) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 x 3.5-inch | 3 | SAS or SATA hard drives or SSDs, cabled | 48 TB |
| 3 x 3.5-inch plus 2 x 2.5-inch | 5 | SAS or SATA hard drives or SSDs, cabled | 63.36 TB |
Drives are cabled rather than hot-plug, so replacing one means powering down and opening the side panel. That is normal for an entry tower and is one of the differences from the larger PowerEdge T440. Cooling is by air with one standard fan and an optional high-performance fan, up to two cabled fans in total, and Dell describes the acoustics as office-friendly.
One socket, no second. Dell's spec sheet lists three processor families: the Intel Xeon 6300 series, the Intel Xeon E-2400 series, both with up to 8 cores, and the Intel Pentium G7400 or G7400T with up to 2 cores for the most basic roles. Because there is no upgrade to a second processor, choose the core count for the life of the server. The configured systems ServerDove stocks use a Xeon 6300 series processor; the entry configuration in the collection pairs a Xeon 6315P with 32 GB of DDR5 and a 4 TB hard drive. Dell's spec sheet does not list clock speeds for individual processors, so ask us for the SKU you are considering.
Four DDR5 DIMM slots. The T160 takes unregistered ECC UDIMMs only, up to 32 GB per module, at speeds up to 4400 MT/s. Registered and load-reduced DIMMs of the kind used in dual-socket PowerEdge servers are not supported, so do not plan to move memory across from a larger server.
| Populated as | Total |
|---|---|
| 2 x 16 GB | 32 GB |
| 4 x 16 GB | 64 GB |
| 4 x 32 GB | 128 GB (platform maximum) |
Our server memory range includes DDR5 ECC UDIMMs; send the service tag or the current DIMM part number and we confirm the match before shipping.
Dell offers the T160 with a choice of internal controllers, a boot subsystem separate from the data drives, and self-encrypting drive support for data at rest.
| Controller | Type | Role |
|---|---|---|
| PERC S160 | Software RAID | Entry RAID using the host processor |
| HBA355i Adapter | Non-RAID HBA | Direct disk access for OS-managed or software-defined storage |
| PERC H355 Adapter | Hardware RAID | Entry hardware RAID |
| PERC H755 Adapter | Hardware RAID | Higher-tier hardware RAID |
| BOSS-N1 | Boot device | Two M.2 NVMe SSDs in hardware RAID for the operating system, leaving the drive bays for data |
| HBA355e Adapter | External non-RAID HBA | Connection to external SAS storage |
The alternative to BOSS-N1 for booting is an internal USB 3.0 port. Data drives are SAS or SATA hard drives or SSDs in the 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch cabled bays; our hard drives and solid-state drives ranges cover both. Because the bays are cabled, the controller and cable set fitted decide how many drives can be connected, so tell us the controller in your unit before adding drives. Self-encrypting drives can be managed with local or external key management.
Two 1 GbE LAN-on-motherboard ports and a dedicated iDRAC Ethernet port at the rear. Expansion is two half-height, half-length PCIe slots, which is enough for a 10 GbE adapter and a RAID or HBA card. Dell lists no GPU options for the T160.
| Slot | Connector | Bandwidth | Form factor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slot 1 | x8 | x4 | Half height, half length |
| Slot 2 | x16 | x16 | Half height, half length |
Ports: at the front, one iDRAC Direct micro-AB USB port and one USB 3.2 Gen1; at the rear, three USB 2.0, three USB 3.2 Gen1, serial, VGA, two Ethernet and the iDRAC port; plus one internal USB 3.2 Gen1.
A single cabled power supply, not hot-plug and not redundant: either 300 W Bronze or 500 W Platinum, both 100 to 240 V AC and Energy Star 4.0 rated according to Dell. The 500 W unit gives headroom for a five-drive configuration and a PCIe adapter. Because there is only one supply, an uninterruptible power supply is the sensible companion for anything that must stay up.
iDRAC9 is embedded, with iDRAC Direct on the front USB port for at-the-server configuration and the iDRAC RESTful API with Redfish for automation. Dell's OpenManage Enterprise console is supported along with its Power Manager, Update Manager, Service and CloudIQ plugins, OpenManage Mobile, and integrations for VMware vCenter, Microsoft System Center, Windows Admin Center, ServiceNow, Red Hat Ansible and Terraform. Security features listed by Dell include cryptographically signed firmware, Secure Boot, Silicon Root of Trust, Secured Component Verification, Secure Erase, Secured-core server and TPM 2.0. System Lockdown requires an iDRAC9 Enterprise or Datacenter licence.
| Form factor | Tower (Dell rates it 3U), under 17 litres |
|---|---|
| Height | 332.5 mm (13.09 in) |
| Width | 132.52 mm (5.21 in) |
| Depth | 408.8 mm (16.09 in) with bezel |
| Cooling | Air, one standard fan, optional high-performance fan |
Dell's spec sheet gives no weight for the T160.
Dell lists Canonical Ubuntu Server LTS, Microsoft Windows Server with Hyper-V, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and VMware ESXi. As a 2025 platform the T160 is on current compatibility lists for these; check Dell's OS support matrix for the exact release you plan to run.
The T160 is a current-generation model, so the units ServerDove lists may be new or refurbished; each listing states which, and every refurbished unit is tested before it goes on sale. We stock configured systems with processor, memory, boot device and data drive fitted, and can build a different configuration, add a second drive layout or a PERC controller, or source a part that is not listed. Hardware is covered by the ServerDove warranty, with extended cover available on request. Delivery across Qatar is typically one day from Doha stock, and base configuration, cabling and installation are available as a service, which for a tower usually means setting it up at the desk or in the cabinet where it will live.

The T160 is a single-socket entry tower: one Xeon 6300 or E-2400 series processor, four DDR5 UDIMM slots, up to five cabled drives, two PCIe slots and one power supply, all in a chassis under 17 litres. The T440 is a larger two-socket tower from an earlier PowerEdge generation with more DIMM slots, more drive bays and more expansion. Choose the T160 for a small office, shop or edge site with one main workload; choose the T440 where several virtual machines or a heavier database need two processors.
Up to three 3.5-inch drives, or three 3.5-inch plus two 2.5-inch drives, all SAS or SATA hard drives or SSDs on cabled connections. Dell's spec sheet gives maximum capacities of 48 TB and 63.36 TB for the two layouts. The operating system can live separately on a BOSS-N1 card with two mirrored M.2 NVMe SSDs, so all the bays stay available for data.
Up to 128 GB: four DDR5 slots at up to 32 GB per module, at speeds up to 4400 MT/s. Only unregistered ECC UDIMMs are supported, so registered or load-reduced DIMMs from two-socket servers cannot be used. Populate in pairs for the best result and keep the modules matched.
Dell lists no GPU options for the T160. Its two PCIe slots are half height and half length, one x16 and one x8 connector running at x4, which rules out the full-height cards used for GPU workloads. If you need GPU acceleration in a tower, ask us about a larger PowerEdge or a workstation platform instead.
No. It has a single cabled power supply, either 300 W Bronze or 500 W Platinum, and it is not hot-plug. That is standard for an entry tower and keeps the chassis small and quiet. If the server must stay up through mains problems, pair it with an uninterruptible power supply and configure a clean shutdown through iDRAC or the operating system.
Dell designed it for exactly that: the spec sheet describes office-friendly acoustics and near-edge deployment on a desk or shelf, and the filter bezel is there to keep dust out in retail and warehouse spaces. Dell does not publish a decibel figure on the spec sheet, so we do not quote one. Cooling is by one standard fan with an optional high-performance fan for heavier configurations.
iDRAC9 with a dedicated rear Ethernet port and a front iDRAC Direct USB port, the iDRAC RESTful API with Redfish, and support for OpenManage Enterprise and OpenManage Mobile. Features such as System Lockdown need an iDRAC9 Enterprise or Datacenter licence; the licence level fitted to a given unit is shown in the listing or confirmed on request.
Yes. T160 systems are held in Doha and delivery across Qatar is typically one day from stock. We can deliver the unit configured with the operating system installed and iDRAC set up, and base configuration, cabling and on-site installation are available as a service. Quotes for several units or a bespoke configuration are available on request.
